This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

These playgrounds can also include accessible amenities, which can include drinking fountains and comfort stations. All NYC playgrounds have pour-in-place rubber or tiles for surfacing. This playground does NOT have an adapted swing seat.

Biography Winwoods Enchanted Playground is the 51st Shane’s Inspiration playground in the United States but the first such playground in Kansas. The park includes special slides, swings and a teeter-totter, fantasy characters such as a dragon that will spray children with a light mist of water when they press his belly button, artificial tree trunks carved to look like woodland trolls, and xylophones the children can play. And it’s all surrounded by a fun, sponge-like safety surface on the ground.

Biography Playground opened in June 2016. It includes a ramped structure with an Aeroglider, slides, and play panels. Ground based play includes accessible swing seats, a Unity Dome and a Teeter Tunnel. There is also a Liberty Swing. This is one of 30 playgrounds that Trillium Health helped to fund.

Biography The playground, a project of Playworld Systems, includes a Aeroglider, a ramped structure, sensory activities, large climbing webs, quiet areas, accessible swing seats, a large sand area, wheelchair swing, a huge hill slide and more. It was a community build with KaBOOM! The Wheelchair Swing is locked to avoid any damage to it. There is a phone number on the swing to call if you want to use it. A parks staff person will come and unlock it for you and will stay at the playground as long as you want to play. When you are done, they will lock it back up. NOTE: One section of the playground has wood mulch (EWF) as surfacing which may make it more difficult for a person using a wheelchair to maneuver through the playground. The hill slide has a fairly steep slope up to the top, but that does not seem to stop people using wheelchairs to get up to slide. Biography This innovative, barrier-free play space invites people of all ages and abilities to play and explore together, in a public park. Designed as “A River of the Senses” its many ‘islands’ offer distinct play areas that stimulate the senses including touch, scent, sight and hearing. Here’s a sampling of highlights: Adventure Island, sponsored by the Police Retirees of Ontario, Inc., provides numerous gross motor play opportunities (including swings), is fully wheelchair accessible, and is surrounded by rubberized play surfacing, looking like a beach with a few waves washing ashore! Sound Island features hanging & hammer chime panels each measuring approximately 3m wide x 2.5m high; turn the nose on ‘talking Bobs’ to record then play back your own voice in an altered state; twist the vertical poles to create interesting sounds too. Most of the equipment in this area has been custom manufactured for this playground. Touch Island is the place to explore the mosaic wall, Braille play panels, move a marble through a maze, feel the surface below your feet, play at the flower-shaped elevated sand & water tables, use the diggers in the sand pit, and pump water to flow along the trough! Maybe even make some mud! Imagination Island has a wonderful stage … just the right place to do impromptu performances for admiring audiences! Scent Island is planted with lots of wonderful ‘smelly stuff’ to explore with your nose and you don’t even need to bend down! Sniff the centre of the big bold ‘flowers’ and figure out that scent; enjoy the huge butterfly sculptures. Sight Island is the place to try out the ‘human sundial’; admire the patterns of light and shadow cast by the arbours & vines on the textured pathway; enjoy the wood sculptures and trees. Look for some birdhouses too! Mother Nature’s Island is a naturalized area, planted with native plant species, which will mature into an interesting home for lots of critters! Circle of Friends is in the centre of it all, a place to sit and count your blessings, watch the fun, and recognize the many donors who have helped bring our vision to life.
