This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Biography Maryland State Parks have thirty-three accessible playgrounds across the state. All have been designed for children between the ages of 5 to 12 years of age. The ADA Access Specialist within MDNR Engineering/Construction, who also serves on MDNR Disabilities Advisory Council, indicated that the following playgrounds meet the Let Kids Play criteria for inclusion in this directory. You can find a map of each park by clicking on the park name. For more information about additional accessibility amenities such as cabins, camp sites, hunting areas, fishing piers, boat ramps, trails, picnic areas, and other adaptive recreation equipment, visit their Marylands’ Accessibility for All website. There are four accessible playgrounds located throughout the park. 1) Bob White Area near the accessible Comfort Station and Shelter; 2) Buck Area near the accessible Comfort Station and Shelter; 3) Doe Area near the accessible Comfort Station and Shelter and 4) Fawn Area near the accessible Comfort Station and Shelter. Biography SENSES Park is an All-Inclusive Playground that caters to children on the autism spectrum. The structures are separated by space to allow for self-learning, exploration and less intense social play experiences for those on the autism disorder spectrum. A key feature for parents is a perimeter fence, so that children can’t wander or bolt. The inclusive play space is fully accessible for children who use wheelchairs. The park is located in Buenaventura Lakes at the intersection of Florida Parkway and Buenaventura Boulevard. Here are some of the amenities you will find: Music instruments (bongo drums, xylophones and marimba) Sand box Play equipment, including climbers and slides Wheelchair accessible merry-go-round Two small picnic pavilions Three water fountains Restroom Small hill to climb or roll down Soothing soundscapes throughout the park

Biography The Sensory Garden Playground is a combination of sensory-integrated playground equipment and amenities along with gardening areas. The 40-acre facility is being developed in four phases. Phase I opened spring 2015. The playground is located in Danada South Park. Accessible, portable washrooms are available onsite for your convenience. Phase I Thanks to the gracious support of donors, Phase I of the Sensory Garden Playground project is complete and opened in spring 2015. Phase I includes the following: 2-5-Year-Old Playground Area Fragrance Garden Paved Pathways Sound Garden Sensory Garden Playground Project Phases II-IV will be completed as funding is secured. These phases will include: 5-12 Year Old Playground Area Art Along the Way (sculptures to be installed Summer 2016) Art Along the Way is a component of the Sensory Garden Playground that will encourage appreciation for art and recreation/play, inspire a spirit of inclusion and imagination for all ages and abilities, as well as foster a welcoming and playful entrance environment for visitors to engage with during their visit. Artwork shall introduce children to fine art through safe, accessible, and interactive elements. This commercial playground equipment is installed near the Children’s Hospital Therapy Clinic, and is used by patients and their siblings, families and the entire community of Broomfield. The PlayBooster® playstructure features sand play elements, auditory and musical activities, swings, sensory-rich play panels, spinners and an accessible ramped playstructure for kids ages 5 to 12. Biography Fairfield County Board of Developmental Disabilities along with the Fairfield County Soil and Water District, the US Natural Resource Conservation Service, the City of Lancaster, the Southeastern Ohio Center for Independent Living, and the Heart of Ohio RC&D created a unique addition to the Lancaster Heritage Trail. The trail has life-sized musical instruments, a boardwalk through a wetland, and an accessible tree house. There are many pictures of both the Sensory Trail and the accessible tree house HERE

Biography The playground features two brightly colored, large climbing structures, swings, a sand table and a zip line, all of which can be accessed by kids of any ability. Centered between the pool and the baseball field at the Sepulveda Recreation Center, the sprawling play area is not fully enclosed, but it is surrounded by walking paths and plenty of grass, providing a safety net for those tots that tend to be runners. Travel and adventure is the theme of the new playground. The smaller of the two play structures is designed to look like a whimsical train. The rubber padded play-space is for the younger set, featuring tunnels, slides and low climbing walls at each train section, all connected by bridges. The larger play area resembles an airport tower, complete with an orange windsock fluttering from the top. A modern merry-go-round, a tall curved slide, a rope web, monkey bars and, a perenial playground favorite roller slide offer plenty to explore, but the real gem of this spot is the zip line. The second zip line features an accessible seat with a safety bar, so that anyone can enjoy the thrill of the ride. Notes Fully accessible restrooms are available Biography Shane’s Inspiration opened on September 21, 2000 in memory of Shane Williams who died of Spinal Muscular Atrophy. It was the first West Coast Universally Accessible Playground created by the Los Angeles Department of Recreation & Parks. This is a fully accessible disabled children’s playground (Universally Accessible Playground). This playground is located in Park Center of Griffith Park (across from the Merry-Go-Round. The Airplane: Cruise down the accessible “jet way” and take off on this jetliner. Pilot and co-pilot can manage the controls in the cockpit while checking their compass for direction. Accessible Slides: Immediately adjacent to the bottom of each slide is a landing pad, which gives with children mobility challenges the opportunity to depart the slide and comfortably. The Lucky Star Chaser: This space shuttle gives children of all abilities a chance to adventure into space. Ronald’s Ship of Dreams: Ronald’s Ship of Dreams, generously donated by Ronald McDonald House Charities, provides hours of imaginative play. Enter through the accessible “gangway” and explore the wheelhouse, complete with a talk tube radio system.
