This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Biography Maryland State Parks have thirty-three accessible playgrounds across the state. All have been designed for children between the ages of 5 to 12 years of age. The ADA Access Specialist within MDNR Engineering/Construction, who also serves on MDNR Disabilities Advisory Council, indicated that the following playgrounds meet the Let Kids Play criteria for inclusion in this directory. You can find a map of each park by clicking on the park name. For more information about additional accessibility amenities such as cabins, camp sites, hunting areas, fishing piers, boat ramps, trails, picnic areas, and other adaptive recreation equipment, visit their Marylands’ Accessibility for All website. This park has 7 accessible playgrounds. Five are located at the East Beach area, while the other two are located at the South Beach Area near the accessible Beach Bath Houses. Sandy Point State Park also offers accessible amenities, including: food and beverage concession, fishing, picnic areas, shelters, bathhouses, and sailing concessionaire. The park is in Anne Arundel County, at the western terminus of the Bay Bridge, off U.S. Routes 50/301 at exit 32.

Biography Atlanta’s Sara J. González Memorial Park, the first park named for a Latino in the State of Georgia, honors inclusiveness and cultural diversity while providing all-abilities accessible child and family oriented greenspace to the growing Atlanta Westside community it serves. It was inaugurated in October 2018 with Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms keynoting. The park features ADA-compliant wheelchair access throughout, a playground for children of all abilities, a children’s open field soccer area, the first electricity-powered “Learning Nook” thanks to Georgia Power Foundation, and a legacy plaza that celebrates Atlanta’s broad population. The Sara J. González Memorial Park commemorates the legacy of Ms. González — a devoted mother and Cuban immigrant whose faith in the American Dream propelled her from small business owner to revered Hispanic, immigrant and minority-rights leader who served all in her community with joy and compassion. Located at Coronet Way and Bolton Road on Atlanta’s Westside, in the same neighborhood where Ms. González lived for 30 years until her passing in 2008, this trailblazing park pays tribute to Ms. González’s love of children, support of families, and her lifelong advocacy for inclusiveness and tolerance.

The $2.3 million project is seven years in the making and designed to be a place where children of all abilities can play side by side. You’ll find a variety of pieces that are built with kids with mobility or strength issues and other disorders in mind. They will allow all kids to be incorporated into play across the 3.5-acre playground – the largest in Raleigh. The pieces are definitely spread out. If your children are young or if they could run off, this isn’t a playground where you can hunker down on a bench and read a book. There are some fences around the perimeter – but not all of the way around. But it’s definitely a place families will spend hours at for years to come. Here are 14 things to look out for when you go: Wide Decking: The massive main play structure features lots of wide decking so kids in wheelchairs and walkers can get in on the play. Handicapped Accessible Picnic Tables: Instead of being stuck at the end of the table, people in wheelchairs can sit with everybody else in these specially designed picnic tables. The tables will sit on one side of the playground in three small picnic shelters, which also are designed to offer a quiet, cozy place for kids with sensory issues to take a break. Equipment Accessed from Ground Level: This play piece and others are examples of play equipment that can be accessed from the ground level instead of climbing or rolling up onto above ground decking that’s mostly found at traditional playgrounds. Biography Playgrounds, Baseball Field, 1 Double Tennis Court, Volleyball Court , 2 Basketball Courts, There are three shelters available on a first come first serve basis, Restrooms, Electricity, Tables, Grills Pickleball Court. The City of Silvis in cooperation with Robo Gators project from Glenview Middle School, East Moline support a project to build an all-inclusive Merry-go-round at Schadt Park. Biography The playground is one acre and is an equestrian theme. A sprawling PlayBooster® playstructure and Evos™ playsystem make up the unique play area called Scott’s Play. The playground welcomes children and families of all abilities with innovative play activities like the Sway Fun® glider. An extensive ramping system brings children using mobility devices to the center of the action where they’ll encounter lots of play panels, crawl tunnels, slides and more. Across from the PlayBooster is the Evos playsystem, which has a whole different set of challenges for all abilities. Biography Built in 2019 with features for a wide variety of abilities. Featuring a poured in place rubber surface which allows for safe play for all. Interactive panels designed to allow space for wheelchairs to fit, multiple cozy spaces for sensory relief and a variety of swings (traditional bucket, toddler bucket, adaptive and disc for interactive play). With the goal of having something for everyone the park also features a large net climbing structure designed support children’s development of balance and appropriate risk taking skills. There are bathrooms onsite, benches and an ADA picnic table. For anyone with mobility challenges it is recommended you park on 184th vs. the lower parking lot as the grade is much easier to navigate for this park sits on top of a hill.

The Village of South Elgin and the FUNdation have spent the past three and a half years planning the construction of a regional one-of-a-kind inclusive playground with almost 2 acres of stimulating, thrilling, and fully accessible play, known as the SEBA Park Project. An extensive ramping system brings kids of all abilities to the center of the action, and inclusive playground components like the SwayFun® glider and Roller Table encourage social play among everyone. And with nature-inspired playground components like the Log Steppers, Log Slide, Log Tunnels and more, this playground, designed in partnership with Shane’s Inspiration, delivers a nature adventure in which everyone can participate. Notes SECOR PARK: In 2003, The National Center for Nature Photography opened on the site, rotating exhibits from prominent nature photographers. Additional attractions and amenities include large picnic areas, playing fields, indoor meeting rooms and picnic shelters, and wildlife feedings stations with indoor viewing areas, called Windows on Wildlife. Biography The Phase 1 playground features (which opened in 2018) include: A Rock-N-Raft offers a great way to play with friends while remaining seated; Wide ramps and low hand rails provide easy accessibility up the play structure; sensory wave climber, rings and a hand cycler give kids a chance to use upper body strength to play; slide transfers offer an easy access point to ride down slides, and soft surfacing offers accessibility throughout the play area. The playground’s design is focused around the 7 Principles of Inclusive Playground Design®, as outlined in Me2®, a program developed in partnership with PlayCore and Utah State University’s Center for Persons with Disabilities. The program provides an overview of why inclusion is so important, helpful research to help stakeholders understand diversity, inclusion, and social equity, and tips for designing inclusive play environments that benefit the whole child, whole environment, and whole community.®
