This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Notes Includes: Shaded structure 5-12 year old playground 2-5 year old playground musical instruments ramped structure climbers Note: There is a combination of surfacing some of which is more difficult for people using wheelchairs to manuever Biography The playground displays bright, primary colors and features wide ramps, which allow two wheelchairs to pass each other, and accessible decks that allow children in mobility devices to reach the highest play components, a RockScape climber, and many ground level activities, including GTJams musical play, for those who are more comfortable using lower play components. The structure is also covered in GTShade to provide protection from the sun on hot days. To complement the large, school age, accessible structure, a smaller unit was also installed nearby for preschool children ages 2-5, as well as several freestanding events, such as an ADA accessible stock car and a whirlwind seat. Engineered Wood Fiber and areas of colorful Poured Rubber were used as safety surfacing to allow impact attenuation from falls and help prevent injury.

Notes This is a championship-caliber baseball/softball complex in West Michigan. The state-of-the-art facility will be every player’s—and fan’s—dream, with 12 ballfields, lights, a covered championship field grandstand, concessions, even a Miracle Field for players with disabilities.

Biography Ashley Nicole Dream Playground, Knoxville’s first totally accessible playground and winner of the 2005 Tennessee Recreation and Parks Association’s Best Facility Award, is located in Caswell Park, across from the softball complex. Opened in June 2005, the Ashley Nicole Dream Playground is Knoxville’s first 100 percent accessible playground and is named in honor of Ashley Nicole Manes, who suffered injuries in a 1999 automobile accident that left her paralyzed.

Notes Des Moines’ largest park is located at SE McKinley Avenue and Indianola Road and has two open-air shelters, playgrounds, an 18-hole disc golf course (click here for a full course map), trail, pond, lilac arboretum, Children’s Forest, lots of shade, parking and open space. BMX and soap box derby organizations lease space in the park for their groups’ events

Biography Maryland State Parks have thirty-three accessible playgrounds across the state. All have been designed for children between the ages of 5 to 12 years of age. The ADA Access Specialist within MDNR Engineering/Construction, who also serves on MDNR Disabilities Advisory Council, indicated that the following playgrounds meet the Let Kids Play criteria for inclusion in this directory. You can find a map of each park by clicking on the park name. For more information about additional accessibility amenities such as cabins, camp sites, hunting areas, fishing piers, boat ramps, trails, picnic areas, and other adaptive recreation equipment, visit their Marylands’ Accessibility for All website. The playground is located between the accessible Atlantic Ocean Bath House and the accessible Camp Shower Building. The park is in the eastern portion of the state in Worcester County, 8 miles south of Ocean City, and may be reached via MD RT 50 to MD RT 611.

Biography Located in the Irving Park community – just off the Kennedy Expressway at Addison and Drake. Athletic Field Park contains an ADA accessible soft-surface playground and spray feature, outdoor basketball and tennis courts, and ball fields as well as a field house and a ceramics building.

Notes Avocado Heights Park is a beautiful park with picnic areas, a children’s play area, a multipurpose athletic field, a basketball court and exercise and fitness stations. The park also has an equestrian arena so equestrians are welcome to bring their horses to the park for day-use. Avocado Heights is a passive park and does not offer programs. Biography This is a Shane’s Inspiration playground. The surfacing appears to be a mix of wood chips (EWF) and pour-in-place rubber. The wood chips may make it more difficult for a person using a wheelchair to maneuver through the playground.

Notes Features: a tot lot rock-climbing wall orange, green and purple play structures a play gym a jungle gym with slides. Biography AAOS partnered with the Friends of Balboa Park and the Neighborhood Parks Department, KaBOOM! and received help from San Francisco’s Recreation and Park Department as well as the City of San Francisco to build this playground as part of their annual meeting. The largest piece of equipment boasts rock walls and climbing nets, two slides, a bridge, an alphabet board translated into sign language, and a wheelchair-accessible ramp. The new playground also has a swing set, a jungle gym with plastic letters on its side to help children learn their ABCs, and a mini yellow school bus.
