This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Biography The playground is located at the back of the park, by Long Lake. Ramona Park has a fully-staffed and lifeguarded beach. The playground has both a large play structure for five- to 12-year-olds and a smaller play structure. The playground has a Sway Fun, two bouncing bug toys, a spinning toy and a PlayMotion X-Wave 2. Admission – Beach Season only: $5 per vehicle daily for Portage resident $10 per vehicle daily for non-resident $25 per vehicle annual Portage resident $45 per vehicle annual non-resident $50 per bus daily for groups of 15 or more Free admission during non-beach season.

Biography The city of Aurora’s Red-tailed Hawk Park is the first inclusive playground in the city. This 8,000-square-foot inclusive playground is brought to life with features like a sensory garden, play equipment, musical instruments and other sensory experiences through sound, color, texture and movement that children of all abilities have the opportunity to enjoy. Play equipment includes swings, spinners, zip-line, slides and so much more all accessible to kids in wheelchairs and walkers. This inclusive playground is gathering place that invites and inspires smiles, fun and laughs for all children to enjoy together.

Within the park there are adapted, baby, and regular swings. There is also a large play area with climbers. Located behind the nature center is a wooded playground with musical equipment, a sandpit, a fort building area, and a tree house. Accessing this playground requires traveling down a wooded path but the sensory experience makes it worth the effort. Mecklenburg County Parks and Rec says, “Inclusive playgrounds are for children of all abilities. The surface is appropriate for wheelchairs and walkers and the equipment is accessible via ramps. Adapted swings are appropriate for children who may still need the safety of a shoulder strap and high seat back. Inclusive playgrounds also contain sensory equipment such as equipment that provides unique visual, tactile, and auditory stimulation.”

Notes Brookside Park is is 61.1 acres. Pasadena’s largest fully maintained park facility located just south of the Rose Bowl Stadium. Extensive parking facilities are available off Arroyo Boulevard. The north section of the park contains one lighted regulation baseball diamond with seating for 4,200 and restrooms. The central section includes two lighted softball diamonds each with 240 seating capacity; a large, lighted multi-purpose field for flag football and soccer; a speaker’s platform with permanent seating; numerous picnic tables; play area; restrooms; and drinking fountains. Barbecue pits are available in most picnic areas. Biography It is located in the southeast corner of Brookside Park, just east of the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center. Beckoning with its pirate ship, Reese’s Retreat comes complete with ramps, a cannonball climber, an eight-bay swing set and sensory play structures that invite children to play with water and sand. The vast blue “ocean” provides a soft floor and easy access for users in wheelchairs and those with impaired mobility. The play area was designed in partnership with the Pasadena Public Works Department, Accessibility and Disability Commission, Recreation and Parks Commission, Shane’s Inspiration, Interplay Design, Recreation West Outdoor Products, and David Evans and Associates. Biography Renee’s Place has two play areas, one section for two to five-year-olds and another section for five to twelve-year-olds. Each play area has a swing set and shade structures. The UAP also has colorful resilient rubberized surfacing and benches embellished with whimsical artist created tiles. The five to twelve-year-old area is in the shape of a train. Sound features include a train engine, whistle and sound of a train going over tracks. Another special feature of the 17,000-square-foot playground is a foot path with a water element that will provide a unique sensory activity, complete with gentle mist. This is a Shane’s Inspiration Playground and the playground consultant was RecWest Outdoor Products.

This carpeted playground has a large play structure with an airplane theme, but the best part of the playground are all of the ground level play activities that provide great vestibular motion. There is an accessible swing, a 4 person see-saw, a 2 person airplane rocker, and a tea cup spinner. There is good shade in the play area and there is a flat grassy area nearby.

Biography This is a Boundless Playground. This playground was built by volunteers from the American Association of Orthopaedic surgeons in partnership with KaBOOM! as part of their annual meeting. The playground is made up of two age-appropriate play structures-one for children between the ages of two and five, and one for six to 12 year-olds. Injury prevention tips posted throughout the playground are also printed in Braille. Slides, swings, climbing and balancing activities, sun protection shades and a variety of play stations for imaginative activities are additional features of the playground.

Biography Revolution Park is a great inclusive park. The rubberized surface is great for wheelchairs and walkers. The climbing equipment is accessible via ramps. There is a wide variety of sensory equipment at this park including ride on bouncing equipment, swinging bridges, sensory panels, balance beams, and tube slides. Many of the sensory panels are accessible from the ground. There are also baby swings at Revolution Park. Mecklenburg County Parks and Rec says, “Inclusive playgrounds are for children of all abilities. The surface is appropriate for wheelchairs and walkers and the equipment is accessible via ramps. Adapted swings are appropriate for children who may still need the safety of a shoulder strap and high seat back. Inclusive playgrounds also contain sensory equipment such as equipment that provides unique visual, tactile, and auditory stimulation.” *Note: The playground surface is a combination of pour-in-place rubber and wood mulch (EWF) which may make it more difficult for a person using a wheelchair to maneuver through the playground.*

Notes The park features: Auditorium, baseball diamond (lighted/unlighted), basketball courts (lighted/indoor/outdoor), childrens play area, community room, handball courts (unlighted), indoor gym (without weights), picnic tables, soccer field (unlighted), tennis courts (lighted). Biography This is a Shane’s Inspiration playground manufactured by Landscape Structures. The playgrounds meet First 5 LA’s goals of developing new tot parks, improving existing parks and making them safe for children under the age of 5, and equipping neighborhood parks with specialized play equipment for children with special needs. The Department of Recreation and Parks and the Exceptional Children’s Foundation also collaborated on the playground at Ritchie Valens Park. This playground has many musical elements that are sure to make everyone smile. Children love the four-sided “On Stage/Jukebox/ Recording Studio” feature as well as a piece that children can enter and pretend to be tending a radio station. Turntables, levers, switches and the like keep a child’s attention for quite some time.
