This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Biography The playground which opened in 2016 includes: a 4,000 square foot play area that features a rope wall, rock wall, along with a variety of castles, swings, slides and monkey bars for children of all ages and abilities. Biography About Palmetto Bay Park Soon after Village incorporation, this park transitioned from a 5-acre park to a 25-acre park facility — a veritable oasis of passive and active attractions, tucked off US-1 just east of the Village Municipal Complex. Formerly known as Perrine Park, Palmetto Bay Park was renamed by the Village Council in 2006. The new Palmetto Bay Park features expansive greenspace, basketball courts, the largest Boundless Playgrounds in South Florida, and a six-field, state-of-the-art softball complex, Palmetto Bay Park is truly a multi-recreational facility. The focal point of the park is a two-story concession building and observation deck. The park also houses an air-conditioned recreation room that allows for indoor recreation activities and meetings. A meandering tree-shaded pathway for walkers, joggers, and bicyclists surrounds the entire property. Covered picnic pavilions within the large open green spaces are a haven for family gatherings and party rentals.

Notes Recreation Centre offers other accessible activities: 25 metre salt purification swimming pool with six lanes, a multi -use leisure pool (includes features such as a zero-depth entry, a lazy river, a tots’ area, two additional lanes, spray toys and benches with hot tub jets), sauna, steam room, swirl pool, additional multi-purpose rooms and an accessible waterslide tower with an elevator allowing people with mobility issues to share in the enjoyment of riding southern Vancouver Island’s tallest and longest waterslide. (Min height to ride the waterslide is 42″) Aquatic Complex Project History two skating arenas, which are bare for four months in the summer, for ice and dry floor activities a weight room with cardio and strength equipment aerobics/fitness, fencing, yoga and a several of other courses indoor and outdoor tennis courts racquetball and squash courts community recreation programs such as arts, music, dance, computers, cooking, language and sports. Biography This is an accessible Landscape Structures Inc PlayBooster® playstructure. An extensive ramping system bring children of all abilities to the center of the playground action. A Sway Fun™ glider provides a unique play experience for children, Reach Play Panels offer lots of fun games, and overhead events, crawl tunnels, slides and more keep all children engaged while they play for hours. The playground consultant on this project was Habitat Systems. The surfacing is wood mulch (EWF) which may make it more difficult for a person using a wheelchair to maneuver through the playground.

Biography This universally-accessible playscape was designed after the many beautiful and unique landscapes found in Michigan-the Great Lakes State. Little explorers can discover Michigan’s wonders and learn about the Great Lakes State through simulated rock, water and fossil features. The playscape includes: an “Up North Woods” cabin, simulated tree fort, sand dunes area, marsh challenge course with simulated cattails, raised sand play area and multiple climbing areas. Colorful rubberized surfacing depicts Michigan’s Lakes and rivers. Biography A partnership between the Lafayette Consolidated Government and the Kiwanis Club of Lafayette, Parc Independence was designed specifically to accommodate children that have physical and developmental disabilities. It eliminates separations, thereby allowing all children to play together. Some features of the playground include extra-wide entrances and ramps to provide access for wheelchairs and other personal equipment, specially-designed swing sets to accommodate wheelchairs, limited entrance and exit points to assist parents and guardians in watching over their children, and many more features typically not considered in park design. Because even the smallest design elements can create the largest obstacles for many children with disabilities, careful attention has been paid towards making the Park ADA-compliant. Our intent is to eliminate barriers and create a place where all children can play together – regardless of abilities. In addition to the playground, Girard Park includes: Main office of Lafayette Parks & Recreation Department, Girard Park Recreation Center outdoor pool (seasonal lessons), 1.25 mile jogging trail, work-out station, covered pavilion with restrooms and grill (reservations required), open play area, tennis courts, hitting wall, basketball courts, backstop ball diamond, covered picnic areas, restrooms, handicapped restrooms, water fountain, children’s playground with baby equipment, 9-hole disc golf course, four petanque courts, pond, natural wildlife, and historical or commemorative markers.

Notes The Raanana Park is one of the largest green lungs in the Sharon area, offering vast, clean and well-kept spaces, as if it was only newly opened. There are many sitting areas here near a big lake, walking and bicycle paths and several sports grounds for a variety of activities. The Raanana Park also offers playgrounds with amusement facilities for children (including the “Friends Park”- a special disabled-accessible playground, the “Gan-Hai” covered zoological garden, a new bird-watching center, an observation point which is situated on a high topographic point and provides landscape views, a café and an exhibition space for works of art. By the way, it is not allowed to have a fire in the park’s area, which means that there are no barbeques here- a real advantage for those who look for a smoke-free peacefulness. The Raanana Park is situated nearYerushalayim (Jerusalem) Street, not far from Beit Levinstein Hospital. Biography In 2005, Beit Issie Shapiro opened the first accessible, integrated park for children in Israel. The project was a cooperative undertaking between the Municipality of Ra’anana, JNF UK, Keren Kayemet, – and was the first of its kind in Israel. The playground, established on a 9-acre area within the Ra’anana City-park, ensures that children with special needs are able to enjoy the recreational facilities of the park with their ‘regular’ peers. Biography Patton Park (formerly City Park) is located in the 1200 block of south Main Street (Highway 83). Patton Park resides on 3 acres and features a shelter house, bathrooms, and Park on the Plains playground (dedicated 12-5-09). Patton Park is located near several restaurants making it an excellent spot for a carry out picnic at one of the many picnic tables. The shelter house is right next to the playground and has electrical outlets for roasting pans, coffee makers, portable stereos, or any other device needed for a good family picnic or business party at the park. A grill and a drinking fountain with a spigot are near the shelter house. The Park on the Plains playground was built in the fall of 2009 by volunteers from the community using funds raised by the community. It is an improvement over the older equipment, much of which was saved and moved to Maddux & Palmer Parks.

Paved walkways lead to the rubberized playground surface. This surface is great for wheelchairs and walkers. There is a wide assortment of sensory equipment at this park including, tube slides, ride-on bouncing animals, a teeter tooter, and sensory panels. The larger of the two climbing structures is accessible via ramp, allowing access to slides and sensory panels. There are typical, adapted, and baby swings at this park. Mecklenburg County Parks and Rec says, “Inclusive playgrounds are for children of all abilities. The surface is appropriate for wheelchairs and walkers and the equipment is accessible via ramps. Adapted swings are appropriate for children who may still need the safety of a shoulder strap and high seat back. Inclusive playgrounds also contain sensory equipment such as equipment that provides unique visual, tactile, and auditory stimulation.” *Note: The playground surface is a combination of pour-in-place rubber and wood mulch (EWF) which may make it more difficult for a person using a wheelchair to maneuver through the playground.*

Biography Buckle in and rocket to the moon at the space-themed Universally Accessible Playground at Parque De Los Sueños in East Los Angeles. This colorful planetary play space features an interactive shuttle with movable controls, steering instruments, and wide wings for climbing. Older astronauts can go for a space walk along sturdy netting and while hubs provide the ideal gathering places for interplanetary chatting and stargazing through periscopes. A fully-accessible 3-foot-high maze provides hours of active and imaginative play. And for children with developmental delays, sound pucks embedded in the playground encourage auditory discovery. This is a Shane’s Inspiration Playground, with equipment from Landscape Structures Inc, and the playground consultant was RecWest Outdoor Products.

Biography This Landscape Structure’s playground opened in 2013. The playground design includes an extensive ramping system, many activity panels to encourage interactive play and playground components that deliver various sensory experiences. a bridge was personalized to mimic the famous Baluarte Bridge, the highest cable-stayed bridge in the world. The real bridge connects the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of Northern Mexico, while the playground bridge encourages kids of all abilities to connect with each other.
