This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Biography The Oak Brook Sandlot, a Universal Playground is designed so everyone, regardless of age or ability, has the opportunity to socialize, play, and explore together. Play is a critical part of the social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development of every child. Unfortunately, the vast majority of playgrounds deny children with disabilities and critical illnesses the opportunity for exercise, entertainment, and social interactions other children enjoy. The Oak Brook Park District built the Oak Brook Sandlot, a Universal Playground filled with poured in place surfacing, double wide ramping and is fully fenced to ensure everyone has the opportunity to play and build meaningful relationships. This one of a kind playground has multiple slides, is fully ramped and has a dual track zip line. Come visit us to experience this universal playground for yourself! The playground is open all year long.

Biography The tree house is located in a large white oak tree and stands 15 feet off the ground. Access is provided from a hard surfaced walkway that connects to a series of ramps which wind through a rocky ledge. The final section of ramp brings the visitor to the base of the tree house. The tree house is located at the southern end of the park near the large picnic shelter and is available for use year round. See more pictures

Biography One of the three accessible playgrounds built in honor of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. This one is located at Celebration Plaza. Themed “Nature Play, Play with Nature,” the new playground touches on Whistler’s resort history, outdoor recreation culture and 2010 Winter Games competition environments. The inclusive playground features a wooden play house for children aged up to six years old, and a tree house play structure for those aged seven to 12 years old. Both have weather protection to offer 12 months of safe and sheltered play. Key design features of the Whistler accessible playground include a multi-sensory wall, which takes its inspiration from the skyline of the Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains, and a large, accessible tree house inspired by the region’s forests. Other elements include a rope climber similar to the existing rope climber, swings, slide, rubberized surfacing and other equipment. Seating integrated into the design allows parents and kids to sit comfortably, gaze at the mountain views and take it all in. From a parent, “There is a large Treehouse structure with a slide, a smaller toddler treehouse with a smaller slide, a rocking boat, swinging discs, a water play area, padded play surfaces, and swings (no infant swings, though). There are restrooms, dining, and shopping all right there.” See more pictures

Biography Our generous community raised nearly $400,000 to build our Inclusive Playground named “Sue-Ville.” We opened in June, 2019 and the playground has been very popular ever since. The playground is on the site of Osceola Medical Center just south of town. We are open 24/7, the playground is gated, and adult supervision is required. There are no public bathrooms, although visitors are welcome to come into Osceola Medical Center or Wild River Fitness during regular business hours to use our public restrooms. Sue-Ville has many features designed for all abilities so that all kids can have fun on our site. We installed a high-tech artificial turf that is padded and safe. There are benches and picnic tables on site. Our playground is part of our larger health campus that includes other activities and venues that allow for kids of all ages, parents, and grandparents to have fun together. The Jeff Meyer Fitness Trail is one of the best outdoor fitness trails in our area, with more than a dozen exercise stations spread around a 1/2 mile walking and jogging loop. The Royal Credit Union Sport Court is multi-functional, providing visitors with access to all racket sports, basketball, volleyball, and other uses. Wild River Fitness is a full-purpose health fitness facility available to members with extensive free weights, exercise machines, childcare, and a variety of fitness classes for all abilities. We are still raising final funding to complete Sue-Ville and add more features to our wonderful new community asset.

Biography The Landscape Structures playground opened in June 2015 The Oshkosh Inclusive Park Project is a community effort, made possible through a partnership of individuals, businesses, and the city of Oshkosh. The mission of the Oshkosh Inclusive Park Project is to create a safe and accessible outdoor recreational environment for individuals of all abilities and ages. The park includes a completely accessible play area with a rubberized ground surface and safety fence. The project includes accessible playground equipment, shade canopies, accessibility ramps and a poured-in-place rubber surface that makes it easier for residents of all ages to access the playground. Equipment is wide enough to allow children in wheelchairs to play alongside other kids, includes sensory panels, and one item, a cozy dome, will allow children to crawl inside an igloo-like structure and observe other children on the playground. There is an accessible restroom and shelter that comply with the American Disabilities Act (ADA), along with an accessible picnic area for all ages.

Biography Opened in May 2016 Designed by Play by Design (Ithaca, New York) with local community input, “OurSpace at Rec Park” features “Spaces” for all ages and abilities. A flowing smooth surface pathway welcomes visitors of all abilities throughout the park’s many delights. The ramps and playground equipment are perfect for all generations to explore. This multi-generational playground expands the concept of play to beyond the boundaries of ability and age. At nearly 4 acres, this is the largest fully accessible multi-generational playground in the State of New York and 300 mile radius. Highlighting the project is a unique playground that captures the local architecture and history. From the famous “Link Trainer” to the Lackawanna Train Station, the 5-12 playground is fully accessible at all levels. The toddler playground invites the imagination and travel with a locomotive and canal boat feature. Toddler swings also include a “Generations” swing where adults can swing with their children. The playground is “boundryless” for all abilities. Special features include a wheelchair accessible Liberty Swing, accessible merry go round, Sway Fun, beautiful instruments, ramping, transfer stations and a unique natural play area with a rock climbing wall and slide. The play doesn’t end on the playground, this project includes an accessible sensory garden with raised flower beds, a central seating area for friends to gather, mosaic’d game tables, and a beautiful accessible tree house which includes a small amphitheater. With plenty of spaces and places for the imagination to explore, OurSpace at Rec Park welcomes all to enjoy the park. Our Space is included in the historic 24 acre Recreation Park, which also features an historic carousel, pool (with lift chair), accessible bathrooms, ball fields (accessible dug outs), tennis courts, open fields and easy parking. The park is open to the during daylight hours and is free to the public.

Biography Hillcrest’s playground, which opened in 2016, offers something for all kids, no matter their interests or abilities. With a rubber surface instead of woodchips, double-wide ramps, and adaptive swings, it’s fully wheelchair accessible, and complete with merry-go-round, rocking bus, and climbing walls. A relaxation station allows quiet time for children who are over-stimulated to soothe themselves. Play panels, including a marble maze, provide hands-on activities for kids who want sensory play or independent games.
