This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Includes 4 tennis courts, 3 lighted soccer fields, 4 lighted baseball fields, walking track, 2 shelters, Handicapped Accessible playground and restrooms. Biography The playground includes a fully ramped play structure, another structure featuring various climbing challenges and rockscape climber, swings including adaptive seats, freestanding play components and poured rubber safety surfacing. The park is also fenced, and has site furnishings and shaded areas for caregivers to sit while their children play.

Biography The playground is located across the street from the Fairbank Community Center at Haskell Field. SMILE (Simple Mobility in a Learning Environment) is a community-built playground. The playground includes climbers, slides, play panels, and spring riders. There is also a playground sculpture of Harry the Hippo which children can climb through.

Biography The 16,000-square-foot all-inclusive playground with sun-shade covered play decks, swings, sensory play equipment and ramps for wheelchair access opened in 2016. The playground includes: A swing for wheelchairs. A 50-foot “zipline” ride for kids in bucket seats. A shady tunnel with star-shaped inserts that light up on sunny days. A bucket-seat merry-go-round. Special slides that don’t generate static electricity, which could interfere with cochlear implants or hearing aids. The “Learning Wall” with Braille letters. There is a Splash Pad next to the playground.

Biography The playground is adjacent to Abilities United and close to the Mitchell Park Library. With seven zones specifically designed to accommodate the needs of all kinds of children, everyone will feel safe and included. The zones include: A music zone which includes: The 24-string laser harp in the Music Zone, created by artist Jen Lewin. When a user breaks one of the laser beams, the harp creates a sounds based on how quickly the person was moving and on the height of their hand (or wheelchair). The pleasing sounds of the laser harp are magical whether one or 50 are playing on it! A Swinging Zone includes accessible swing seats and bird nest swings. A Spinning zone includes a wheelchair accessible merry-go-round, a Cozy Cocoon, a rope climber that spins and other pieces. A Tot Zone A Pretend Play Zone includes a stage and treehouse A Sliding Zone which is a grassy hill with many different ways to get up to the top and many ways to slide back down. Some other the features include: A 2-story fully wheelchair-accessible playhouse and small theater; A kid-friendly stage, complete with costumes to get imaginations going; A magical treewalk that takes visitors through the trees as never before; Retreat areas throughout the playground for children with autism that get over-stimulated by traditional park experiences; Socially inclusive playground zones, specifically designed to make the park easy to navigate; Interactive music experiences to excite all musical interests and abilities; A “Kindness Corner” to ensure that our kids know that bullying has no place here, and will serve as a powerful reminder to be kind to those around us. Food is available from Ada’s Café at Mitchell Park. Visitors to the playground enjoy some of Ada’s delectable goodies through a cart, which is managed by disabled individuals, with the help of volunteers.

Biography This a fully accessible and inclusive play area with an infant, preschool, and school-aged area. There is a large swing section with traditional, tire swings and a wheelchair swing. The park also includes a huge sand play area. Wachter Park also houses the aquatic center with a wave pool.

Biography The 3,428-square-foot playground features a unique design to meet the special needs of the students. The playground includes rubber safety surfacing material, wheelchair accessible ramps, play panel activities and transfer stations to make play easier for the children. It also features slides, climbing and balancing activities and steering wheels for imaginary play activities. The playground was built by American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons as part of their annual meeting in partnership with KaBOOM!

Biography Key features of the playground which opened in 2015 include areas of music, motion, and sanctuary such as sensory elements with drums, xylophones, and a boat that sways; a slide equipped to eliminate static electricity that can inhibit the play experience for students with cochlear implants; and visual panels with letters, numbers, and puzzles that include braille. The playground also features an area for outdoor experiential learning, including sandblasted animal footprints and a garden area with plants for identification and discovery.

Notes Park Features: 310 acres 4 softball fields 8 full-size soccer fields Volleyball court 2 picnic shelters Concession stand Playground Biography Mallard Creek Park features a playground that is partially covered with a large canopy. The rubberized surface is great for wheelchairs and walkers. The larger of the two climbing structures is equipped with a ramp, making slides and tubes accessible. Sensory equipment includes tubes and a collection of ride-on bouncy animals. The sandpit contains different types of diggers. One digger is accessible from the grass on the edge of the sandpit. Mecklenburg County Parks and Rec says, “Inclusive playgrounds are for children of all abilities. The surface is appropriate for wheelchairs and walkers and the equipment is accessible via ramps. Adapted swings are appropriate for children who may still need the safety of a shoulder strap and high seat back. Inclusive playgrounds also contain sensory equipment such as equipment that provides unique visual, tactile, and auditory stimulation.”
