This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

This signature playground design mimics a freeway, overpass and common traffic signals found in the city. The ramped play structure delivers climbers, playground slides and sensory play panels, plus kids can climb in the car-themed structures and use their imaginations to navigate the street-themed graphics in the rubberized playground safety surfacing. Biography Features of this state-of-the art destination playground, which opened in the summer of 2017, are based on GameTime’s 7 Principles of Inclusive Design(TM) and include: – A spongy surface designed to accommodate people who use mobility devices and those who might have trouble walking on uneven surfaces, such as toddlers, the elderly and people with injuries. – Separate areas designed for ages 2-5 and 5-12, as well as freestanding elements such as the double zip line to accommodate all children. – Swings, which are excellent for Vestibular input and calming, including typical belt swings, toddler swings, high-back swings for children with low muscle tone, a disk swing that enables children to swing together, and the highly acclaimed Expression Swing(TM). – A “sensory-rich environment,” which includes panels, musical elements, and the newly developed Shadow Play(TM). – Ramp-accessibility to all platforms. – And climbers and slides designed to challenge children regardless of their abilities.

Notes Legacy Commons is a community gathering area adjacent to the Memorial Park Promenade. While the Promenade encourages people to walk between Downtown Rapid City and the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center, Legacy Commons offers a destination for more community members and visitors to stay and enjoy Memorial Park. In keeping with the Remembrance and Renewal theme of the 2012 40th anniversary of the 1972 flood, Legacy Commons has features to help remember the flood while offering new features for current and future generations. Remembrance features include a coordinated look at existing memorials, and includes moving the war memorial from its current location to a prominent place adjacent to the Promenade and adding a spray jet fountain in the pond that resembles the smaller spray in the existing flood memorial. The renewal features in Legacy Commons include five separate play areas with adjacent themed gardens Climber area with art garden Accessible inclusive play area with an elevated accessible garden Nature climbing area with adjacent Black Hills, prairie and medicinal gardens Age 2-5 play area with a children’s garden Active play area with an adjacent sustainable landscape. The play areas and gardens surround a three-fourths acre Great Lawn for spontaneous and planned gatherings. Discovery features within Legacy Commons include 70 images of plants, animals and fossils hidden throughout the park, and, for the parents, ample benches to relax, or three separate fitness features to work out. The existing hillside amphitheater features a new at-grade concrete stage/platform for events as well as a comtemplative area next to Rapid Creek. All bike path connections and through routes remain. The restroom interiors at the existing bandshell will be remodeled to accessibility standards. The sculptural play area features an artful Evos® playsystem for kids ages 5 to 12. All children can have fun in the inclusive play area that includes a Sensory Play Center®, Sway Fun® Glider and accessible sensory garden. In the natural play area, kids discover a mix of nature-inspired components, including custom rock outcrops typical of those found in the Black Hills. Interwoven throughout the area for 2- to 5-year-olds are custom features celebrating Ellsworth Air Force Base. And finally, kids can play Pulse™ Tennis and Pulse™ Table Tennis, the interactive and multisensory games for 2 to 8 players. Biography The inclusive playground was installed in association with the 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi. In addition to being fully inclusive, the playground offers a nature-inspired play experience with log steppers, climbers that mimic logs and boulders, and a tree house. The nature-inspired features along with the sensory- and accessible-focused playground components help to welcome children of all abilities.

LATCP is dedicated to improving the lives and dignity of all children by developing accessible playgrounds and inclusive recreation programs allowing children with disabilities the opportunity to experience play, side-by-side, with their able-bodied peers. David Weingarten, Vice-Chair of LATCP was introduced to the organization that spent years researching, developing and designing Israel’s first accessible playground, which opened in Ra’anana, Israel in 2005. Michael Alon, Chairman and Founder of LATCP, worked on the Ra’anana playground paired up with Weingarten to establish the organization as a 501 c 3 in 2006. Michael Alon and David Weingarten worked together to build the organization to what it is today. Collaborating with government officials, organizations, civic groups and parents they established a mission to create a similar playground in Nassau County. Notes With 134.97 acres of land, Friendship Park is the largest Township owned property. It is located at the intersection of Baldwin and Clarkston Roads with access from Clarkston Road. The park’s building houses summer camps, preschool classes, yoga, tai chi and safety classes, along with rentals. The park incorporates the following facilities: 4 baseball fields 8 soccer fields ADA accessible playground (Dragon’s Den) 1 wheelchair accessible playground (coming 2014) Picnic shelter (40 people at tables) Park building with restrooms (indoor and outdoor access), indoor multi-purpose meeting room, small kitchen (45 people at tables or 75 seats) and covered outdoor portion (75 people at tables) Restrooms in the northern area of the park (coming 2014) Wedding gazebo/shelter (150-200 people in area) Historic Howarth School House and Porritt Barn Fishing Pond Limestone surface park trails Community Garden (coming 2014) Parking areas Biography The playground includes two fully accessible wheelchair swings, a Jam Box and a variety of auto-sensory elements that allow children to have fun while improving physical, sensory and cognitive abilities. Notes Features: Interactive Maze Accessible Slides Accessible Swings Water Play Two “Tree Houses” Biography This 10,000-square-foot playground’s colorful zoo and carousel theme draws on historic community landmarks, enchanting adults and children. Little ones can travel through a fun-filled, interactive maze while school-age kids slide, swing, and play with the animal artistry. Two zoo animals guard the entrance…ready to spray water at the touch of a button. For the more adventuresome, two “tree houses” provide hours of mystery and intrigue. The playground was made possible through the combined efforts of Councilmember Ed Reyes, the City of Los Angeles Recreation and Parks Department, and Shane’s Inspiration. The equipment is from Landscape Structures Inc and the playground consultant on this project was RecWest Outdoor Products.

Biography Lindsay/Lyons Park and Sports Complex is a 136-acre facility with 10 lighted baseball fields and four lighted softball fields, two lighted football fields, 18 unlighted soccer fields, two lighted soccer fields, a barbecue pavilion, two playgrounds (including one all-inclusive playground and rest room facility for children of all physical abilities), picnic tables, barbecue grills, rest room facilities, and a concession stand with a pavilion. Recent additions include a paved walking trail around the playground, three 30-seat picnic pavilions, a sensory garden for sight-impaired children, a donor pavers garden, and additional trees.
