This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Notes Located on Route 10 across from Cheshire High School, Bartlem Recreation Area was named for the Town’s first Recreation director, Richard C. Bartlem who served as Director from 1968-1993. Park amenities include the Community Pool, a 90 foot baseball diamond, soccer, lacrosse, Kids In Motion playscape, a pavilion, picnic area, community gardens and skate park. Biography 38,000 square feet and is understood to be the largest in Connecticut. This fully accessible poured-in-place surfacing, a Kidrox Climber, a Double Webscape and a Playworld Music Center. In addition, there is a drinking fountain and picnic area, Cool Topper Sails for lots of shade and a gated fence to keep children safe.

Biography Located at the trail head of St. Tammany Trace, the Kids Konnection Playground was designed based on the theory of “parallel play,” which means that individuals with and without disabilities can play side by side. The Americans with Disabilities Act requires 50 percent handicap accessibility. The Kids Konnection Boundless Playground is 70 percent handicap accessible. The fence and gates offer added safety for parents of all children. The surfacing of the playground provides added safety and accessibility. It is “latex free,” allowing individuals with Spina Bifida to play without the worry of exposure to latex. The Roller Slide was added to the design to offer a slide that individuals with Cochlear implants could enjoy. The Sway Fun offers a safe alternative for individuals in a wheelchair to experience swinging The playground provides sensory experiences with sand, plants and sound. Individuals who are hearing or sight impaired or those with autism can benefit greatly from these sensory centers. Kids Konnection Playground Hours: 7 days a week (except closed for ½ day Christmas Eve, all day Christmas Day & Thanksgiving Day) 8 am – 5 pm November, December, January, February 8 am – 6 pm March, April, September, October 8 am – 7 pm May, June, July, August CLOSED every MONDAY morning until 11:00am for maintenance

Biography KIDS adventure playgrounds provide an opportunity for stimulating, inclusive adventurous play on a closed access site. Playgrounds offer an accessible green space within an urban environment, where children can freely choose their play in a setting that is supportive of their requirements. Priority is given to children and young people with specific needs and their siblings, however, young people within the age range living in the surrounding community are welcome. The Lady Allen Adventure (Wandsworth) Playground is a safe and secure oasis on the north edge of Wandsworth common, surrounded by trees and shrubbery. There are lots of swings, slides and play structures and a wild wooded area behind the building where children dig, make dens, climb and hide. The indoor facilities include play areas, a soft play installation, an arts and crafts area, an indoor slide and a video games room. The Playground provides adventurous, imaginative, and exciting play opportunities for disabled children and their siblings between the ages of 5 and 14. Opening Times: The playground is open during term time for School Visits; School Holiday Playschemes: Monday to Friday 10.00 to 16.00 After School Club: Tuesday to Friday 15.30 to 18.00 Saturday Club 10.00 to 16.00 Lady Allen is also open to the public at specific times during term times and holidays. Biography The mission of Kids’ Park Lafayette is to provide a safe, accessible, learning and recreational environment to people of ALL ages and ALL abilities. There are two accessible playgrounds divided by age groups. In addition to the accessible playgrounds, there is an accessible Sensory Botanical Garden on the grounds of Lafayette Elementary School which stimulates the senses through use of flowers and plants (sight and smell), musical instruments, chimes, and seed pods (hearing), textured plants (touch), and edible herbs (taste).

Winding paths and ramps are integrated into the design; chair swings are side-by-side with traditional-style swings; varied surfacing on walkways provides textural cues; and lush landscaping appeals to the senses of sight, touch and smell. Restroom facilities include adult-size changing tables and extra room for wheelchairs and strollers. Combining Play with the Natural Environment Kids Together Playground could be described as “a playground in a garden” or “a garden in a playground”. The extensive use of landscaping features – trees, plants and rolling hills – makes Kids Together Playground unique and inviting for all generations of visitors at all times of the year. Plants at KTP have been specially chosen to be child-friendly, with a stimulating variety of colors, textures and fragrances. Plants provide natural materials – leaves, sticks, seeds and flowers – that can be used in creative and imaginative play. Art for Play As Kids Together raised funds for playground construction, another community group, Cary Visual Art, joined the effort by commissioning and funding artwork for Kids Together Playground. This added dimension was the perfect complement and brought even greater opportunities for kids to explore creative and imaginative play. By expressing their interest and commitment during the design phase, Cary Visual Art was able to work with our design team to reserve spaces for functional art. KATAL – by William Moore, Pittsboro, NC This multi-piece sculpture invites children of all ages to climb aboard. There’s an especially cozy spot in the curl of KATAL’s tail! CVA held a contest for children to name the sculpture and KATAL was born, as an acronym for Kids Are Together At Last. Many children identify KTP as “the Dragon Park”. This wonderful sculpture also inspired the Kids Together mascot. Oracle Benches and Dinosaur Bench – by Jim Gallucci, Greensboro, NC The oracle bench invites interactive fun – whisper into one trumpet-shaped tube, and your friend on the other end can hear you! It’s designed so wheelchair-users can play, too. The bright purple dinosaur bench adds color and a resting place near the toddler swings. Botanical Benches – by Rodney Carroll, Baltimore, MD Giant, aluminum leaves decorate these four benches, each one accurately representing the leaves of a different tree – gingko, sassafras, redbud and tulip poplar. Biography “Cobb Park (Kidscape Village I & II) was my winner simply because it has several different play structures for all ages and abilities – most of which were updated within the last 4 years. One of those playgrounds is fully wheelchair accessible and includes swings with additional support for those children who need it. Whether your child wants to climb, hang, spin, swing, or slide there are multiple areas for them in this 5.8 acre park. Large umbrellas provide a bit of shade on the play structures for the kids, though the parents are mostly left out in the sun despite the many mature trees in the area. The toddler playground seems to get the best shade. There is a pavilion with picnic tables and the restrooms are somewhat close, depending on where you are in the park (they’re in the concession building near the baseball field). As if that’s not enough, there is a very small play area on the opposite side of the park (on Bank Street) that is for young toddlers. It has a playhouse, a variation on a merry go round, swings, small slides, and a “hive” climbing structure. There are 2 potential downsides: first the park is open on 3 sides: to the parking lot on one side, and to low traffic roads on the other 2 sides. However, it’s large enough that accidentally running out to the road is not really a problem. The other issue is that it is across the street from Campbell High School and when school lets out there is an influx of teens trying to sneak a cigarette before going home and releasing some pent up energy. Separate Playgrounds: 3 play structures (toddlers, 5+, and the wheelchair accessible one), 3 separate swing areas, multiple netted climbing areas, rock wall and train…and that’s not including the additional playground on the far side of the park described above! Ground: Mulch throughout most of the playground, rubber on the wheelchair accessible playground and swings. These convert to volleyball courts for youth and adult leagues. “Open gym” recreation is available when leagues are not in session. An upstairs wellness area, made possible through cooperation with Golden Valley Memorial Healthcare. Cardio and strength training machines and a 0.1 mile indoor walking track. Aerobics area. A four-lane, 25-yard lap pool. Large play structure. Lazy River. A large serpentine slide that is part inside and part outside the building. Therapy pool. Eight-person spa. Party pit area. Biography The playground opened in September 2021 and is a place where all children, regardless of abilities, can play together. The City of Clinton partnered with Shane’s Inspiration/Inclusion Matters on the project Children with physical, social-emotional, sensory, cognitive, and communicative disabilities can play alongside able-bodied children, with ALL benefiting from the health and socialization aspects of a playground. Adults with disabilities are able to access the play area to accompany their children/grandchildren while playing. This is especially beneficial to military members who are facing the challenges associated with reintegrating into civilian life after deployment. For military members with physical disabilities, full participation in family life is vital to the family’s well-being. The all-inclusive playground is located adjacent to the Clinton Community Center and Aquatic Center at 1002 E. Sedalia Avenue. Notes King George/Cambie Community Park is a large 30 acres park in East Richmond and offers various amenities including an artificial turf field, spray/waterplay, community garden, and a picnic area. This sports oriented community park has many opportunities for outdoor play including 5 sports fields 4 ball diamonds, 3 basketball courts, 3 tennis courts and spectator bleachers. The King George Park artificial turf field opened in September 2008 and provides a top-rate playing surface for all field sports groups. In addition to the the sports amenities in the park, there is a themed waterplay area with geysers, spray toys and more. This spray park opens the week of July 1 and closes after Labour Day, or as weather permits. In extreme dry summers, the waterplay area may be closed for water conservation purposes. Near the waterplay area is the “Gathering Place”, a unique gathering area as it provides seating for Adjacent to the Gathering Place is a large picnic space for large groups and events. The picnic venue is perfect for summertime company events and large family gatherings. This picnic area is available on a first come, first served basis and can no longer be booked through the City of Richmond Rentals office. Biography The playground opened in 2014 in the field shared by Kathleen McNeely Elementary School and King George Park just east of Cambie and No. 5 Road. It has pour-in-place rubber surfacing. A ramped structure with a roller slide. A large disc swing, a mutli-sensory music station and sensory panels.

Biography The city’s largest fully accessible playground is a legacy of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and one of three showcase inclusive playgrounds built in the 2010 Winter Games host communities of Vancouver, Whistler and Richmond. New play opportunities such as sand play table, rotating climber, and saucer swings have been included to ensure universal access and encourage imaginative play, sensory experiences and fun for children of all ages and abilities. Biography From website, “Our plan is to build a playground with play options for all children. With a surface similar to astro-turf, the playground will be fully accessible to children in wheelchairs. Parents in wheelchairs will have the ability to join their kids and push them on the swings. The playground will have a high-backed see saw and merry-go-round, designed to support children with limited upper body strength, as well as high-backed swings. It will have a Cozy Dome—a climbing structure that also provides a good place for a child with autism to decompress and reduce excessive stimuli. There will be several playground pieces that can assist with vestibular stimulation through spinning. There will be metal slides that kids with cochlear implants can use (typical plastic slides have too much static), shade for kids who can’t have too much sun and braille and sign language panels for all kids to learn. It will be designed so that children in wheelchairs can climb up high (a priority for those in wheelchairs) and it will have a special “Sway Fun Glider,” a play area designed so that a child doesn’t have to be transitioned out of their wheelchair to play with their peers.’ Playground opened in fall 2016.
