This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Biography Playground opened in 2015. The playground includes the following accessible activities: 2-Track Zip Krooz Zipline Ooodle Swing We-saw See-Saw Omni Spin Merry-Go-Round Roller Slide 2-Bay Swing Set with 2 High Back Bucket Swings Music and Activity Panels The surfacing is engineered wood mulch which may make it more difficult for a person using a mobility device to maneuver through the playground. They are working on fundraising to put in Pour-in-Place surfacing.

Biography The playground includes wide ramps that are wheelchair accessible, adaptive swings, several slides and climbing areas. Adding to the fun you will find a low-height “Toss-n-Score” Basketball Basket, and a large “Sunblox Sail Roof” providing covering from the sun on warm summer days. There is also a “Whirl Wind” spinning seat, “bouncing” stationary cars and a See Saw.

Biography From Kids Haven, “Hannah’s Dream is a huge playground in the huge East Shore Park, not to be confused with East Rock Park. Both are in New Haven, but Hannahs’ Dream is in the eastern part of New Haven, across a bit of water. It feels like a different city and far away, but the access is by the highway so it takes no time to get there on I95-North to exit 50 (the second exit across the Q bridge). Turn immediately onto Woodward Avenue for 1 mile south. The entrance is at the corner of Hervey Street. The park can also be reached by the G bus line that goes down Townsend Avenue to Lighthouse Park. East Shore Park has an ice rink, tennis courts, access to the water, and several playing fields. Hannah’s Dream includes a sandbox (bring your own toys), several swing stations, and several play structures, including half a dozen slides. One section is for younger kids. Biography Opened May 2015. 5,370 sq ft. of fun; barnyard/animal themed area accessible to children and caregivers of all abilities; fenced around to provide the utmost safety. Features: Safe, spongy surfacing that ensures mobility for children/adults in wheelchairs and walkers and for those who experience difficulty on uneven surfaces. Ramping systems from the bottom to the top of every play element, transfer stations, specialized seating, hand holds, and climbing system slanted to assist children’s climb and reach. Swings including adaptive swings (high backs) for children with low muscle tone and toddler swings. Stainless steel slides to enable children with Cochlear ear implants to enjoy the experience of sliding (plastic slides shorten out hearing devices) Sensory rich environment including musical elements. Play elements that promote parallel play; creating opportunities for children to play together. Adequate shading, especially for children who have difficulty regulating their bodily temperature. Numerous interactive panels fostering cognitive development designed to spark children’s imagination.

Biography The park is home to a sprawling, inclusive PlayBooster® playstructure. With an extensive ramping system, children of all abilities are able to access nearly every point on the playground. They can reach the crawl tunnels, many different slides and play panels, and other fun playground components. Additionally, custom roofs and CoolToppers® shade systems provide protection from harmful UV rays. The playground equipment is from Landscape Structures Inc and was built by RecWest Outdoor Products. This playground was done in collaboration with Shane’s Inspiration.

Biography Facilities available for play during non-school hours. This playground was a donation from a teacher in memory of her daughter who passed away 6 years ago. The project was originally Alexa’s Playground and through many revisions and a location change, we were able to place the playground in between the elementary school where she teaches and the middle school next door. It was important to the teacher to build a playground that included students of all abilities. The playground was dedicated on April 29, which would have been Alexa’s 10th birthday. The Pink and White Sign lists all the generous donors to the playground as well as a personalized logo panel with the school name and mascot.

Biography The Harris Field playground was PlayRights first community build project. Features include: Fibar compressible base, barrier free access, Braille boards, multiple ramps and elevated transfer stations, a roller slide and tactile and auditory features. It was assembled in a day with volunteers from the parent group and community of Ingersoll.

Biography The playground includes wheelchair-accessible ramps and platforms wide enough for two wheelchairs to pass one another. They also have specialized swings designed for different age groups as well as handlebars at the slides and climbing walls. The Environmental Learning Center and the Watt’s Memorial Overlook are also wheelchair-accessible.

Biography The playground, a gift from the Kiwanis Caldwell/West Essex to the school district, (opened in 2014) is designed to promote all-inclusive play among students with special needs and their peers. The playground, equipped with walkways, ramps, hand rails and landings to assist children with mobility issues access to the play equipment, is built lower to the ground, making it safer for students
