This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Biography The playground which opened in 2014 is located at Memorial Park, the site of the 9-11 Garden of Reflection on Woodside Road. The playground is just to the left of the bathrooms and picnic pavilion. From the article announcing the playground, “The most exciting part of this playground will be the rubberized surface that will be easily accessible for children in wheelchairs or children that may have difficulty walking. It will be laid out with a wonderful design of vines and leaves keeping with the ‘Secret Garden’ theme,” said Huchler-Smith. “A huge Sequoia Log that can be climbed on, rolled through, run through, or just sat in is a perfect example of children of all abilities being able to use the same piece of equipment alongside each other,” said Huchler-Smith. “Activity panels will be used by all to increase eye hand coordination and make sounds with the Merry Musical section,” she continued. One of the playground pieces, the Rock N Raft, will be accessible by wheelchair and then others can join in on the raft and glide back and forth, she said. “Of course there will be swings and various climbing structures,” said Huchler-Smith. “We tried to have most of the pieces with the garden theme – Mushroom table, Dragonfly seesaw, etc.”

Biography The school was chosen as the grand prize winner of the “PLAYSKOOL Win a Boundless^™ Playground Essay Contest” to have a $300,000 Boundless^™ playground built in their community. The essay, submitted jointly by third-grade teacher Scott Mickey and parent Lisa Popovich, beat out almost 1,000 entries which were received from 44 states plus the District of Columbia during the summer and fall of 2006. The goal of the contest was to raise awareness that playgrounds should not exclude children with disabilities – instead, playgrounds can and should be places where children with and without disabilities can play side by side. McCullough’s Boundless^™ Playground is a wonderland of activities and measures approximately 27,000 square feet or 0.62 acres. The largest play area in the playground utilizes Wide Ramps, a ramp wide enough to allow children in mobility devices to pass each other so they never have to wait for the ramp to be clear to continue their play. Slides and climbers are placed at several different deck heights, allowing children the opportunity to develop skills, and then move up to the next level of challenge. The playground also features areas to promote imagination, sand and water play, social interaction, and strength and skill development. The entire space is covered with a mix of GT Impax surfacing including Poured in Place rubber, a single piece surface that is one of the best for mobility device access. It was built during the summer at a site previously designated as a practice field adjacent to the elementary school and centrally located for community use.

Biography The City of Scranton’s largest park, Nay Aug, grants residents and visitors a touch of nature amid the city landscape. Walking trails, picnic areas, kid-friendly rides, two (2) playgrounds, two (2) Olympic-sized swimming pools and waterslide complex number among the attractions. The Everhart Museum is also located within the park. A rock-strewn gorge and waterfalls add to the allure and have been named a National Natural Landmark. A pedestrian footbridge opens in 2007 to access parkland across the Roaring Brook untouched for many years. Nay Aug Park’s David Wenzel Tree house is the first of its kind in Pennsylvania, opened on Friday, May 25, 2007. It overlooks the gorge, rising an awesome 150 feet above. The tree house was constructed by Forever Young, Inc., with public and private donations and set the stage for additional tree house construction in other cities across the United States.

Biography #POCONOTMNS Inclusive Playground at Pocono Raceway The #PoconoMtns Inclusive Playground is place for children of all ages and abilities to learn, grow and play together. The nearly 5,000 square foot playground is recognized as a National Demonstration Site, making it one of top 100 inclusive playgrounds in the country. The playground is another amenity available to all camping and Infield Block Party guests during our major events weekends. It is also open to local residents and track visitors to use throughout the spring, summer and fall months, free of charge. The #POCONOMTNS Inclusive is located inside Pocono Raceway’s infield. It includes several key inclusive elements: A rocker designed for wheelchair access and seating for the respective caregiver, an element which provides upper-body strength conditioning for children as they use a hand peddler to move a platform back and forth and an aspect which will allow for side-by-side play among children in a wheelchair and those do not require one. The playground is open to the public and will remain open throughout the summer and into the fall. Biography This Leathers and Associates playground includes a large tree-house with ramps at different levels, sensory panels and musical instruments. There is an airplane and a train as well as a large kaleidoscope in a lookout tower. A lot of imaginative play can occur at the recording studio and stage. Biography Sky’s the Limit is the first public playground built in Chester County that meets the ADA guidelines for 100 percent accessibility. Care was taken to insure that children and adults with disabilities of all kinds would be able to fully enjoy the playground together. Special equipment blends into the standard equipment so that all children can play side-by-side regardless of physical or developmental disabilities. Some of the special features of Sky’s the Limit are smooth, shock-absorbent safety flooring, ramped play structures, wheelchair transfer stations, abundant ground-level play opportunities, auditory play panels, Braille, and special-needs swings. All of the traditional climbing, swinging, and rocking activities are also provided. The playground is completely fenced and includes many benches surrounding the area. It is close to a picnic pavilion and drinking fountain, and a short walk from bathrooms that are open seasonally. Sky’s the Limit is located in Kerr Park in the Borough of Downingtown. The closest intersection to the playground is Pennsylvania Avenue and Wallace Avenue. The parking area can be accessed from Wallace Avenue, down the driveway next to the Downingtown Area School District Administration buildings.

Smith’s beautiful, 16,000 square foot Playhouse was designed solely as a play space for children by one of Philadelphia’s most prominent late 19th century architects, James H. Windrim. The Playground is situated on its original historic landscape – , wooded terrain, and sloped hills – and is home to the century old Ann Newman Giant Wooden Slide, a treasured play experience for generations of Philadelphia’s children, as well as other unique pieces of play equipment. In addition to the Ann Newman Giant Wooden Slide, the 6 1/2 acre Playground has more than fifty pieces of state-of-the-art play equipment for children 10 and younger and includes a Tot-Lot just for children 5 and younger. Biography This playground was built by volunteers in one day through KaBOOM! It opened 9/12/14. It includes a Triumph Climber, a climber designed to provide challenge for all children. It also includes a Quattro See Saw.

Notes The Boyce Mayview Park is home to the Upper St. Clair Community Recreation Center as well as Regulation Baseball Field,Baseball/Softball Field, Multipurpose Field, The Miracle League Field, Pavilions, Concession Stand, Batting Cage and The Outdoor Classroom Biography Opened in the spring of 2015 at the Upper St. Clair Miracle League Field, this unique playground was designed like the skyline of Pittsburgh. The yellow all accessible bridge is built to resemble Roberto Clemente Bridge as seen from Pittsburgh Pirates PNC park. There are Red LED lights that are push button activated, which are the same lights asused on a truck trailer on top of bridge light up. Another climber resembles Ft. Duquesne bridge. There is blue climber that resembles PPG Place. There are accessible swing seats and a bird nest swing. A NEOS 360. A piano that one can roll and run over to make it play.
