This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Biography The playground which opened in 2016 includes inclusive equipment adjacent to the original playground. The surfacin is Pour-in-Place. It includes a 12-passenger capacity Merry-Go-All Accessible Whirl, an arch swing that can accommodate multiple users at the same time, an inclusive roller table and activity panels.

Biography Opened in June 2014. It is a fully handicapped accessible park that offers visitors A quarter-mile wheeling and walking path around the pond. An over-size bridge, where at least two wheelchairs can easily pass. Four fully accessible fishing piers. A shelter and flag pole. Livestrong Memorial Garden. Fully accessible playground equipment, installed over a special surface Chad Erickson Memorial Park and Vietnam Veterans Trout Pond was developed in consultation with Special Olympics, Rotary, local gardeners, Mathy Construction, Ingersoll Rand-Trane Co., Gillette-Pepsi, U.S. Fish and Wildlife, and participants in the Livestrong cancer survivor network. A portion of the playground has wood chips (EWF) as surfacing making more difficult for people who are using a wheelchair to maneuver.

Notes This active recreation site features 535 acres which include a barrier-free playground, tennis courts, two swimming pools (for lessons only), a Sprayground, an inline rink, basketball courts, open fields, and 2.3 miles of paved trail for walking, biking, and in-line skating. There are also athletic fields available for use for games only, no practices. Please consult the Athletic Field Rentals link to the right under “Facilities” for further information. Biography Challenger Place is a place for all children to play in Monmouth County. This universally accessible playground provides all children, at their own level of play, an opportunity to laugh, play, grow and learn together. This play facility, opened in June 2004, includes elevated surfaces that are accessible to those in wheelchairs and Braille signs for individuals who are visually impaired. Each of the three play structures has areas in where children of varied abilities can play together, enjoying fun and stimulating activities. This playground project was a joint venture of the Monmouth County Park System and Challenged Youth Sports, and Middletown. Adjacent to Challenger Place is the Sprayground. This water-enhanced playground is a great place to be cool and play with water. The facility is open daily from mid-May- early September. The Sprayground opens weekdays at 11 a.m. and at 10 a.m. on weekends and holidays. Closing is at 7:30 p.m.

Biography To honor a 5-year-old boy who lost his life, his parents set out to build an inclusive playground at the elementary school he once attended. Working with their local playground consultant, General Recreation, the Hinishes determined what features were necessary and those they would include should they surpass their fundraising goal. The playground design was a fully-accessible PlayBooster® play structure, Sway Fun® glider, sensory play activity panels, the Rollerslide and Roller Table, plus all of the traditional playground pieces kids love. The Zack Hinish Foundation organized more than 70 volunteers who helped install the new playground over four days. Biography This Landscape Structures playground was the result of the Park Cities Rotary Club Centennial Project gift to the City of Dallas. Nestled alongside Bachman Lake just east of the Bachman Recreation Center, it has a nautical theme and all of the events are accessible by wheelchairs utilizing the extensive ramp system. It has a custom Lighthouse, the exclusive Landscape Structures SwayFun glider, ships, a custom “Southwest Airlines” two seat tuffrider, and more. It’s a great place because you also get to watch airplanes land on the runway across the lake at Love Field! The park includes a pavilion for a picnic, and the jogging trail around Bachman Lake is between the playground and the lake. This is a beautiful, accessible playground for all abilities. Biography The playground at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles is located just off the HBO Café. The spot is meant to be a relaxing place for patients and families. It is a place for kids of all abilities to play together. With a spongy fall surface throughout the grounds, kids are invited to steer a pilot’s wheel, peer through a periscope, sway back and forth on a wheelchair-accessible glider and prop themselves up with the help of strategically placed handle-bars to count on an abacus – activities that are physically and mentally challenging and fun. This is a Shane’s Inspiration Playground that opened in 2010 with equipment from Landscape Structures.

Notes Park features: Benches Picnic Areas Picnic Tables Playground Restrooms Water Water Fountain Biography The playscape is an accessible and inclusive place for children to play and exercise featuring a poured rubber safety surface, wide ramps throughout, a roller slide, 4 seat We-saw, Expression Swing, Liberty Swing, Omni Spinner, Team Swing, and a therapeutic seat on the Zip Krooze. Some of the equipment is from Landscape Structure, the playground was built by volunteers and designed by Leathers and Associates.

Notes Information about Darwin Botanical Gardens What to see and do A network of paths connect the main features in the Gardens. It is advisable to wear a hat, sunscreen, suitable footwear and insect repellent. Drinking water fountains are located throughout the Gardens. There is a drink machine in the Orientation Centre which provides assorted beverages as well as a drinking fountain. Visitors are most welcome to bring food into the Gardens as we currently don’t have any food facilities available. Plant Display House Contains a collection of tropical orchids, bromeliads, other exotic plants and special seasonal displays. Open every day from 7:30am – 3:30pm. Cycads Cycads are grown throughout the gardens. Collections of Northern Territory, Australian and International cycads are displayed near the Geranium Street entrance. Palms A collection of approximately 450 species have been planted. Most are located near or in the Rainforest Gully. Rainforest Gully Waterfall and ponds provide a setting for an established rainforest with an under storey of palms and shade plants. Walk on the boardwalk through the Rainforest loop to see these magnificent trees. Children’s evolutionary playground This award winning playground is a refreshing, safe and shady retreat where children and parents can enjoy quality family time. Native Top End plants Planted throughout the Gardens, but particularly in areas such as the open woodland. Baobab collection You can see all the baobab species in the Woodland section of the Botanic Gardens. Mangroves and coastal plants These are the basis of the Garden’s collection on the beach side of Gilruth Avenue. There is a boardwalk which forms part of a walking track to the Museum. The former Wesleyan Methodist Church This unique prefabricated church was designed, constructed and erected on Knuckey street, Darwin in 1897. It is the oldest church building in the Northern Territory. In 2000 the church was moved and reconstructed at the Gardens. It is located at the Gardens Road entrance. Biography Playground Finder has a complete list of inclusive playgrounds in Australia. Visit this playground on Playground Finder. The playground now includes Fast growing plants, planted as a maze, where children can play and explore. A sand castle fort where children can dig and build A beach along the creek where children can sit or explore the creek A Bamboo Ambush Trail for those games of hide and seek A marvellous climbing frame built around a fallen tree that gives a great lookout over the playground A grassy area and a rolling hill, for parents and children alike. An orchard of exotic fruits that allow children to see where their tasty fruit comes from A palm jungle gym to explore The Mondo maze for little people to stroll in Play equipment such as funky sticks and rockers shaped like dolphins and pelicans. The whole playground is surrounded by a boundary fence and a wrought iron gates as which helps to define the playground and adds to the safety of the children using the playground.

Biography A Boundless™ Playground includes a Sway Fun Glider resides in Inglenook Park. The Play Farm at Inglenook Park consists of farm-themed play equipment, including tractor bouncers, animal cutouts and an enormous playscape that has red barn top roofs throughout. The new Play Farm will be the largest playground in the city, complimenting the existing fitness trails, ball diamonds and the restored Miller Barn at the 42-acre Inglenook Park. The safety fall zones surrounding the play equipment are covered by a combination of rubber and wood fiber safety surfacing. The Play Farm exceeds federal standards for accessibility, allowing children of all abilities an opportunity to play together. Federal guidelines require that 50 percent of a playground’s elevated structure be accessible. By comparison, a “Boundless Playground” requires that at least 70 percent of play activities serve children with physical disabilities, allowing for greater “integration” of all children. The playground funded in part by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation‘s Able to Play project in honor of the Foundation’s 75th anniversary.
