This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Biography The playground has a Smith Rock theme and includes 10 slides and parallel zip lines for children with and without disabilities. There is a 5-12 year old area and a 3-5 year old area. There are even a few pieces of equipment designed for toddlers. There is a group swing as well as accessible swing seats, belt seats, and toddler seats. Other equipment includes: an accessible glider, basketball hoops, two ramped structures, climbing rocks and much more. Sidewalks are 8 feet across, wide enough so that two wheelchairs can be operated next to each another. And the entire playground area has a soft surface. An inclusive wheelchair whirl was added to the playground in 2017.

Take a ferry ride! Children can pretend to be settlers as they shuttle people and cargo across the playground’s “Willamette River” on a play replica of the ferry that Eugene Skinner operated near the present-day Ferry Street Bridge shortly after settling in the area. Play in the rain! Help create the headwaters of the “Willamette River” at the Rain Circle, a water play element located in Kalapuya Village. Children control the rain with a push of a button that operates seasonally from 9.m. to 8:30 p.m. Discover a Kalapuya summer dwelling! Kids can play on, under and around this climbing structure, modeled after a Kalapuya summer dwelling. Do some climbing! On a play replica of Eugene’s unique basalt climbing columns at Skinner Butte, children can safely experience the thrill, challenge, and camaraderie of rock climbing, as well as the view from the top! Pretend you’re a pioneer! Creative play is fostered in Pioneer Village, where children can make believe they’re blacksmiths, school teachers, hotel patrons, and the town mayor. The possibilities are endless in this historical replica of Eugene, circa 1865. Dig for fossils! What better way to learn about the history of the area than to discover it yourself? Dig in the sand and uncover “artifacts” that reveal physical evidence of Eugene’s history, from dinosaurs to pioneer settlements! Ride in a stagecoach! Head out West in a play replica of a stagecoach modeled after the ones that parked out in front of the St. Charles Hotel in Eugene.

Biography This pilot project is supported by an emerging body of research strongly suggesting that children are growing up disconnected from nature. This disconnect can have alarming impacts – more time in front of screens and monitors, increased depression, increasing obesity and diabetes, and near-sightedness. Nature-based play can provide important connections for children and adults to the natural environment. Playing in natural environments improves language skills and collaboration; improves imagination and creativity; supports positive social development; and enhances balance, agility, and overall health. Westmoreland Park’s Natural Play Area features include: Creek Mound – a concrete stream channel with willow tunnels, water pumps, mazes where children can manipulate the water’s flow, and a large sand play area. Forest Mound – features logs tilted at varying inclines for climbing and adventure, a hill slide build on a natural embankment, and boulder scrambles. Mountain Mound – made of natural boulders and logs featuring varying degrees of difficulty, for climbing, balancing and unstructured play. Log Climbers – log segment sculptures for climbing; this feature calls to mind tree climbing. Creative Building – building frames for creative play with “loose parts”, such as branches, pinecones, etc., for building forts, tents, etc. Crystal Springs Interpretive Markers – inspired by the recently restored namesake creek that runs through the park. Basalt column stones are engraved with poetic phrases, telling the story of Crystal Springs. Enchanted Forest – a grove of Giant Sequoia trees serves as the centerpiece of an area for free and imaginative play. Grassy picnic area – grassy mounds for sitting and picnicking Park benches – log benches and standard park benches. Split rail fencing – low fencing to help keep younger children within the boundaries of the play area.
