This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Direct ramp access to the largest area, the School Age section Sensory-rich play stations Elevated sand boxes 8 ft. suspension bridge Imagination & Activity Panels such as a sight ‘n sound panel, magic ball popper panel, vision adventure panel, park ranger panel, race car panel and more. Biography Playground is opened to the public during non-school hours. The playground includes a ramped structure, swings, accessible swing seats, Aeroglider, A Cozy Cocoon designed for children with autism, a see-saw and spinners. The playground has surfacing which is a combination of wood chips (EWF) and pour-in-place. The Wood Chips may make is more difficult for a person using a wheelchair to maneuver through the playground.

Notes Park includes: Recreation center; baseball/softball field; multi-use field; basketball court; tennis courts; picnic pavillions; stage/amphitheatre (interactive musical feature); greenspace Biography The core of this park is accessible to individuals in wheelchairs. Designated parking spaces and a ramp provide accessibility to the picnic pavillions as well as the courts. There are paved walkways to and from most amenities, including the outdoor stage area.

This playground does have an adapted swing seat. This playground is set in a small valley surrounded by large trees and rock outcrops – a dramatic topography that characterizes the northern part of Central Park. The Conservancy’s playground designers chose the playground’s colors, layout and forms to blend with the surrounding landscape. Features: Playground highlights include a sandbox, embankment slide, modern climbers and spinners, tire and bucket swings and a contoured safety surface. Water Feature: Four granite posts spray water into a centrally located water play area. Recent Reconstruction: The Central Park Conservancy reconstructed the playground in 2006.

It includes a NEOS 360-a large electronic game, an Aeroglider, ramped structure. There is a Cozy Cocoon that provides a place for children to crawl that muffles noises and is designed for children on the autism spectrum and a Drop Zone which is a gently spinning ride down to the ground.

Biography This Shane’s Inspiration and Landscape Structure’s playground opened in 2014. The Play 4 All playground is an “inclusive” playground. Every part of the park is accessible by a wheelchair. One piece of equipment is a spaceship that has a spot open for a child in a wheelchair to ride while it rocks. The park also has a sand pit where there are dinosaur bones in the sand, music equipment that helps kids with sensory problems and more. Kids ages 5 to 12 can roll, jump and climb aboard this PlayBooster® playstructure that features quirky UFO roofs and satellite toppers. The moon and stars on the CoolToppers® shade system fit right in. Moon-rock steppers and a concrete solar system offer educational activities along with tactile experiences. Notes Amenities Includes accessible restroom, baseball field, basketball court, football field, paths – paved, paths – unpaved, picnic site – reservable, picnic tables, playground, soccer field, softball field, statue or public art, and tennis court. Biography This pilot project is supported by an emerging body of research strongly suggesting that children are growing up disconnected from nature. This disconnect can have alarming impacts – more time in front of screens and monitors, increased depression, increasing obesity and diabetes, and near-sightedness. Nature-based play can provide important connections for children and adults to the natural environment. Playing in natural environments improves language skills and collaboration; improves imagination and creativity; supports positive social development; and enhances balance, agility, and overall health. Westmoreland Park’s Natural Play Area features include: Creek Mound – a concrete stream channel with willow tunnels, water pumps, mazes where children can manipulate the water’s flow, and a large sand play area. Forest Mound – features logs tilted at varying inclines for climbing and adventure, a hill slide build on a natural embankment, and boulder scrambles. Mountain Mound – made of natural boulders and logs featuring varying degrees of difficulty, for climbing, balancing and unstructured play. Log Climbers – log segment sculptures for climbing; this feature calls to mind tree climbing. Creative Building – building frames for creative play with “loose parts”, such as branches, pinecones, etc., for building forts, tents, etc. Crystal Springs Interpretive Markers – inspired by the recently restored namesake creek that runs through the park. Basalt column stones are engraved with poetic phrases, telling the story of Crystal Springs. Enchanted Forest – a grove of Giant Sequoia trees serves as the centerpiece of an area for free and imaginative play. Grassy picnic area – grassy mounds for sitting and picnicking Park benches – log benches and standard park benches. Split rail fencing – low fencing to help keep younger children within the boundaries of the play area.

Notes Park includes: Childrens play area, basketball courts (unlighted/outdoor). Biography This is a Shane’s Inspiration Playground. Kids ages 5 to 12 visit this jungle-themed playground for spectacular sensory and inclusive play fun. A custom Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete (GFRC) sensory wall morphs from a tree into an elephant, with a leopard and other animals hidden within. Kids are encouraged to climb aboard these custom animals and nature-inspired rock climbers, breeze down the Roller and Cloudburst® Slides and enjoy the Sway Fun® Glider with all of their friends. Biography The playground features equipment from Landscape Structures and is located next to a community center and walking path, the play area helps promote health and fitness for all. And a forest of CoolToppers® Full Sails keeps everyone comfortable as they play. The playground consultant for the project was Rep Services. In addition to the playground Westwind Lakes Park includes Fruit and Spice Park, the Deering Estate, Metro Zoo, and the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden.

Biography Whispering Pines Elementary in Humble, TX added an inclusive playground to their outside features to enable all children to play together. They only added three pieces. Even though the surfacing is Engineered Wood Fiber, we wanted to show you how a few pieces, if they are the right pieces make a difference.
