This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Notes McCormick Park contains Currents Aquatic Center, a state-of-the-art indoor aquatic facility, Silver’s Lagoon, a wheelchair-accessible children’s fishing pond, baseball diamonds, and MoBASH Skate Park. Additionally, the playground site lies in close proximity to abundant pa Biography Playground opened in 2014. A rubberized surface enables children and adults alike to navigate the area, and wide spaces between structures and grassy areas surrounding the playground enables children to retreat. There is a “play mountain” that resembles Mount Sentinel with climbing features that offers different routes to the top.

Notes Details George R. Sims, one of New Port Richey’s earliest promoters, donated Sims Park (then named Enchantment Park) to the City in 1924. He died in 1954, and in accordance with his instructions, he was buried about 50 feet from Orange Lake without a tombstone – just a redbud tree to mark the spot. (However, his remains were moved to a cemetery some years later.) Sims Park is protected by New Port Richey’s very first ordinance, and because of Ordinance One, Sims Park will remain the people’s park forever. Dogs are welcome in Sims Park and around Orange Lake on a leash. More history can be found here. Biography Sky’s the Limit is the first public playground built in Chester County that meets the ADA guidelines for 100 percent accessibility. Care was taken to insure that children and adults with disabilities of all kinds would be able to fully enjoy the playground together. Special equipment blends into the standard equipment so that all children can play side-by-side regardless of physical or developmental disabilities. Some of the special features of Sky’s the Limit are smooth, shock-absorbent safety flooring, ramped play structures, wheelchair transfer stations, abundant ground-level play opportunities, auditory play panels, Braille, and special-needs swings. All of the traditional climbing, swinging, and rocking activities are also provided. The playground is completely fenced and includes many benches surrounding the area. It is close to a picnic pavilion and drinking fountain, and a short walk from bathrooms that are open seasonally. Sky’s the Limit is located in Kerr Park in the Borough of Downingtown. The closest intersection to the playground is Pennsylvania Avenue and Wallace Avenue. The parking area can be accessed from Wallace Avenue, down the driveway next to the Downingtown Area School District Administration buildings.

Biography Playground opened in September 2014. It includes shade hats, an accessible glider, a ramped structure, parallel bars, slides, a rock climber, and a sit & spin merry-go-round. The surfacing is 1/2 wood mulch (EWF) which may make it more difficult for people using wheelchairs to maneuver through the playground.

Biography Maryland State Parks have thirty-three accessible playgrounds across the state. All have been designed for children between the ages of 5 to 12 years of age. The ADA Access Specialist within MDNR Engineering/Construction, who also serves on MDNR Disabilities Advisory Council, indicated that the following playgrounds meet the Let Kids Play criteria for inclusion in this directory. You can find a map of each park by clicking on the park name. For more information about additional accessibility amenities such as cabins, camp sites, hunting areas, fishing piers, boat ramps, trails, picnic areas, and other adaptive recreation equipment, visit their Marylands’ Accessibility for All website. Children ages 5-12 can enjoy climbing walls, zip lines, a ten-tire bouncer, tire swings, a fish music wall and much more. Through a cooperative project between the Maryland Department of Environment, Maryland Environmental Service, and DNR, funding was made available for the construction of a community built tire playground at Smallwood. In a four day period, a playground with the theme of fish and history was created. The playground entrance features art murals by Mattawoman Creek Art Center artists Bob Kenyon and Gene McCandless, and the fishing theme can be seen throughout the playground as over 65 hand-painted fish dot every piece of equipment. More than half of the structures are accessible to children with disabilities.

Smith’s beautiful, 16,000 square foot Playhouse was designed solely as a play space for children by one of Philadelphia’s most prominent late 19th century architects, James H. Windrim. The Playground is situated on its original historic landscape – , wooded terrain, and sloped hills – and is home to the century old Ann Newman Giant Wooden Slide, a treasured play experience for generations of Philadelphia’s children, as well as other unique pieces of play equipment. In addition to the Ann Newman Giant Wooden Slide, the 6 1/2 acre Playground has more than fifty pieces of state-of-the-art play equipment for children 10 and younger and includes a Tot-Lot just for children 5 and younger. Biography We have included this playground because there is a fence, a spray park, adapted swing seat, and good surfacing. For many children, this is makes it accessible and inclusive. For others, they may need more adaptations. There are two main play structures, one standard one for younger children and one for larger with several slides, several kinds of climbing walls, a rope wall, monkey bars, suspended “mushrooms”, and two kinds of spinners: one standing and one hanging. There are several swings including infant and adapted swing seat. There’s a balance beam as well. The playground also includes a small football-themed spray ground, fenced from the main playground. Biography The City of Stow, in conjunction with the Kiwanis Club of Stow-Munroe Falls, began a fundraising campaign in 2007 to fund the building of a special needs playground. Donations from individuals and businesses in the community, along with funding from the City of Stow, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, the Kiwanis Foundation, CVS and Tallmadge Asphalt and Paving Company, allowed the project to move forward with construction. SOAR Playground opened for play in August 2008. SOAR Playground is fully accessible to all children, including those with physical or developmental disabilities, and provides an avenue for children of all abilities to play together. A special needs playground is an integrated play area that is specifically designed to insure that children of all abilities are able to play in a safe area created to meet their special needs. The playground includes a variety of stimulating opportunities for self-directed, challenging and independent play. SOAR Playground is located next to an existing playground at Silver Springs Park, allowing whole families to experience a truly barrier-free play environment. The addition of SOAR to the Stow Parks system allows children of all abilities to play, explore, and imagine with their friends and families.

Notes Called the “Gateway to the Bronx River,” Soundview Park is situated where the Bronx River opens into the East River. When the City of New York acquired the original 93 acres of land for this park in 1937, the entire area was composed of marshland. For a good chunk of its history, Soundview Park was a partially developed park built on a landfill. The southern third was once open water, while the remaining 2/3 of the park was tidal marsh, complete with three streams. Landfill operations began in the 1920s and lasted forty years. The landfill increased the height of the shoreline up to 30 feet above the marsh elevation, decreasing public access to the water. Happily, the park is now revered for its sports fields, fishing, and gorgeous views across Hunts Point to Manhattan. Today, the 205-acre park offers six grass baseball fields, a cricket pitch, a running track, a soccer field, six basketball courts, six handball courts, a running track with synthetic turf field, walking/biking paths and a new performance lawn. Biography The small playground includes wheelchair-accessible ramps and platforms wide enough for two wheelchairs to pass one another. They also have specialized swings designed for different age groups as well as handlebars at the slides and climbing walls. Wheelchair-accessible facilities also include the Basketball and Sand Volleyball Courts, the Wave Pool, the Horse Show Ring, and the Picnic Complex.
