This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Paved walkways lead to the rubberized playground surface. This surface is great for wheelchairs and walkers. There is a wide assortment of sensory equipment at this park including, tube slides, ride-on bouncing animals, a teeter tooter, and sensory panels. The larger of the two climbing structures is accessible via ramp, allowing access to slides and sensory panels. There are typical, adapted, and baby swings at this park. Mecklenburg County Parks and Rec says, “Inclusive playgrounds are for children of all abilities. The surface is appropriate for wheelchairs and walkers and the equipment is accessible via ramps. Adapted swings are appropriate for children who may still need the safety of a shoulder strap and high seat back. Inclusive playgrounds also contain sensory equipment such as equipment that provides unique visual, tactile, and auditory stimulation.” *Note: The playground surface is a combination of pour-in-place rubber and wood mulch (EWF) which may make it more difficult for a person using a wheelchair to maneuver through the playground.*

Biography Parkview Family Park, ownd and maintained by Parkview Health Sytems, includes a fully ramped, inclusive playground and swing area by Little Tikes Commercial, unitary fall surfacing SofTiles by SofSurfaces, outdoor fitness equipment by TriActive America, several shelters, restrooms, walking paths, plantings, and open space. This popular park was developed in 2008 through the vision of the Parkview Hospital Foundation, with the assistance of The LandPlan Group LLC and Parkreation Inc., and represents the largest privately owned playground and health park in Indiana. Biography Buckle in and rocket to the moon at the space-themed Universally Accessible Playground at Parque De Los Sueños in East Los Angeles. This colorful planetary play space features an interactive shuttle with movable controls, steering instruments, and wide wings for climbing. Older astronauts can go for a space walk along sturdy netting and while hubs provide the ideal gathering places for interplanetary chatting and stargazing through periscopes. A fully-accessible 3-foot-high maze provides hours of active and imaginative play. And for children with developmental delays, sound pucks embedded in the playground encourage auditory discovery. This is a Shane’s Inspiration Playground, with equipment from Landscape Structures Inc, and the playground consultant was RecWest Outdoor Products.

Accessible freestanding drum set and spring rider installed in the same use zone of playground structure with transfer station and rubber tiles as surfacing. Biography Maryland State Parks have thirty-three accessible playgrounds across the state. All have been designed for children between the ages of 5 to 12 years of age. The ADA Access Specialist within MDNR Engineering/Construction, who also serves on MDNR Disabilities Advisory Council, indicated that the following playgrounds meet the Let Kids Play criteria for inclusion in this directory. You can find a map of each park by clicking on the park name. For more information about additional accessibility amenities such as cabins, camp sites, hunting areas, fishing piers, boat ramps, trails, picnic areas, and other adaptive recreation equipment, visit their Marylands’ Accessibility for All website. There are three accessible playgrounds at this park. They are located in: 1) the Hilton Area near the accessible Camp Shower Building; 2) the Avalon Area next to accessible Shelter #104 near the accessible Comfort Station; and 3) the McKeldin Area between accessible Group Shelters #508 and 512 and near the accessible Comfort Station. After playing on the playground in the Avalon Area you can take a walk on the scenic Grist Mill Trail, a 1.5 mile paved multi-purpose trail along the Patapsco River. The park is located in Ellicott City.

Biography Patricia LeBlanc playground is Fort Worth’s second accessible playground for children of all ages and abilities. It includes musical instruments, audio, swings, slides, and bridges to encourage children’s motor, visual, and auditory processing. This park also has shorter structures and turf to lessen the risk of injury. It also includes two covered pavillions, water fountains, portable restrooms, and benches (some covered).

Biography The playground, which opened in 2016, with a northwoods theme, has a rubberized surfacing so children of all abilities can access and enjoy the play equipment, which includes ramps, slides and climbing apparati. There are molded, high-back swings with harnesses and a high-back “omni spinner” with transfer points for children who use wheelchairs and walkers. Sensory-rich elements also will provide activities for those with developmental disabilities. A playground in Bemidji by in located near the Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox famous statues.

Biography Read the blogs about this amazing playground and see great pictures: OCmom blog Fun Orange County Parks Pavion Park Playground is about universal play, and providing fun activities and equal access for all, including children and caregivers of all ages and abilities. The City of Mission Viejo contracted RJM to update its old playground with an emphasis on Universal design. The park retained its original features such as a Braille wall and dedicated off-street accessible parking, while adding new features that include a rubberized surface with footprints/signage of indigenous animals from adjacent Oso Creek, and new equipment that reinforces the universal-design principles. The park includes a wide variety of accessible play equipment including a main tree house with slides and accessible ramps and interactive boards, rocking boat that fits a wheel chair, accessible sand diggers, spinners, swings that are equipped with harness/support to protect a child’s neck, and interactive light/sound games. Shade trees surround the playground, and benches and chairs face one another and are embedded throughout the playground to encourage visitors to interact. Biography Located on the south side of Waubonsie Creek on Pearce’s Ford, north of U.S. Route 34. A 1.6-acre park features an accessible playground with a poured-in-place rubberized surface overlooking the Waubonsee Creek and Waubonsee Greenway.The playground was a joint effort of the Oswegoland Park District and the Fox Valley Special Recreation Association.
