This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Notes Amenities at this facility include: All Inclusive Playground Fishing Access to Fox River Trail Open space Shelter with picnic tables Baggo Biography Imagine a one-of-kind playground with uniquely constructed foundations, intricately crafted animals and critters carved into them and special rubberized turf. The Village of South Elgin and the FUNdation have spent the past three and a half years planning the construction of a regional one-of-a-kind inclusive playground with almost 2 acres of stimulating, thrilling, and fully accessible play, known as the SEBA Park Project. An extensive ramping system brings kids of all abilities to the center of the action, and inclusive playground components like the SwayFun® glider and Roller Table encourage social play among everyone. And with nature-inspired playground components like the Log Steppers, Log Slide, Log Tunnels and more, this playground, designed in partnership with Shane’s Inspiration, delivers a nature adventure in which everyone can participate. Even more, the playground safety surfacing also includes leaf graphics to carry the nature-inspired playground theme throughout the design.

Biography The Sensory Garden Playground is a combination of sensory-integrated playground equipment and amenities along with gardening areas. The 40-acre facility is being developed in four phases. Phase I opened spring 2015. The playground is located in Danada South Park. Accessible, portable washrooms are available onsite for your convenience. Phase I Thanks to the gracious support of donors, Phase I of the Sensory Garden Playground project is complete and opened in spring 2015. Phase I includes the following: 2-5-Year-Old Playground Area Fragrance Garden Paved Pathways Sound Garden Sensory Garden Playground Project Phases II-IV will be completed as funding is secured. These phases will include: 5-12 Year Old Playground Area Art Along the Way (sculptures to be installed Summer 2016) Art Along the Way is a component of the Sensory Garden Playground that will encourage appreciation for art and recreation/play, inspire a spirit of inclusion and imagination for all ages and abilities, as well as foster a welcoming and playful entrance environment for visitors to engage with during their visit. Artwork shall introduce children to fine art through safe, accessible, and interactive elements. A minimum of three and a maximum of five sculptures will be placed near the facility’s entrance path. – Boulder Climbing Area Accessible Treehouse Accessible Sensory Integrated Multi-Purpose Sports Field Water Play Area

Notes Southwind Park is a National Model Park. The unique 80 acre state-of-the-art park serves as a national model by providing a new dimension of inclusion for all people, “without boundaries.” It has gone beyond full compliance of the American Disabilities Act, with a special emphasis and attention given to individuals with physical and cognitive needs. Biography The park includes: Three completely accessible fishing piers on the lake allow anglers to try their luck at catching bluegill, bass and catfish. One of the city’s largest playgrounds is barrier-free and includes accessible swings and outdoor musical instruments. For safety and comfort, there is pour-in play surface. This 8-acre grassy area is ideal for kite flying, Frisbee and just hanging out with friends and family. Five picnic shelters, equipped with ceiling fans and electric outlets, are scattered throughout the park. A large familiy picnic shelter is located near the great lawn and sports courts. The Enabling Garden has raised planters for seated gardening. The Tranquility Garden, for persons with Alzheimer’s or dementia, has seating areas and a grove of white birches. The Fragrant Garden features a waterfall and sensory plants in easy reach. The Children’s Garden includes a vegetable garden, native plant area, bird attracting garden and many different paths and whimsical items. The Butterfly Garden has interpretive signage, seating and a water feature. Navigating the park is easy with a 2 1/2 mile concrete trail that has built-in directional guides and a color-coded wayfinding system for individuals with cognitive disabilities. The park’s exclusively designed tram is accessible and carries up to 8 people, providing either a complete tour or a ride to a specific park location. a barrier-free tree house/nature observatory

Biography The Danville Swimming Pool at Garfield Park is home to – The Sprayground for Everyone. It is a zero-depth water-play area accessible to all people, regardless of their abilities. So many children have enjoyed the water features at the AMBUCS Playground for Everyone AMBUCS thought they would try to create an entirely water based playground. It also seemed like a good way to assist the City of Danville with the pool. As with the Playground for Everyone, this playground is designed around enabling disabled children to play in the water – not just roll up and sit in it.

Sunnyside is the southernmost park in the District. Biography From Time Out Chicago Kids, “This 5,500-square-foot park is best known for its slide: Wheelchairs can be rolled up the eight-foot-long ramp, with room on top for someone to help a child out of a chair and down the slide. It’s named in memory of Aurora Mayor Tom Weisner’s son, a quadriplegic with cerebral palsy who loved slides so much that his parents would carry him up, then ride down with him. The park also has wheelchair-accessible picnic tables and ground covering made of ground-up tires, which is both a smooth surface for wheelchairs and good for cushioning falls.”

Biography The playground opened in September 2016. There are chair swings along with typical swings; a chair zip line, next to a typical zip line; and the main structure doesn’t have rope ladders or other moving objects that could prevent a person with disabilities or a small child from using it. There is merry-go-round was designed to be wheelchair-transferable. There is a sensory wall. The playground was developed by Hope Helps which is dedicated to promoting local scholarships, research & advocacy to those individuals diagnosed with autism and their families.

Notes Located in the southeast corner of Elmhurst, Butterfield Park was renovated in 2016 and is home to the Park District’s inclusive playground, the Playground for Everyone, which is perfect for children of all abilities. Butterfield Park also has four baseball diamonds as well as a recreation building, picnic shelter, lighted tennis courts and soccer field. The recreation building serves as a satellite location for Sunbeams & Rainbows. Notes In June 2014, through the generous cooperation of the City of Byron, ownership of Tiger Town Park, located at 709 Hampton Drive, was transferred to the Park District. The Byron Park District renovated this park site to include a new inclusive playground, zip line play unit, Dynamo swings, new plaza area with permanent game tables, bocce ball court, full-size basketball court, additional parking spaces, asphalt pathway through the park, and additional landscaping. The Tiger Town Park is also an on-leash dog friendly park with waste bag stations for your use. Biography Playground opened in 2014. Equipment includes Zip Line, bird nest swing, a ramped structure and more. Surfacing is mulch (EWF) which may make it more difficult to maneuver through the playground.

Biography The playground which opened in 2015 is equipped with slides, a ramp for children in wheelchairs, plastic bongo drums, color wheels, a merry-go-round with added safety features and large plastic maracas, among other features. Biography The playground features specialized swings that accommodate wheelchairs without a person needing to leave their chair. The playground also includes stations for sensory play, swings for disabled students who do not need a wheelchair, a slide that is wheelchair accessible, a large “boat” that glides back and forth and a rubber surface that makes it easier for wheelchairs to get around.
