This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Notes Features: Sway Fun Ramped Structure Biography The playground includes a Landscape Structures PlayBooster® playstructure, designed by Shane’s Inspiration. Poured-in-place safety surfacing allows children using mobility devices to access every part of the playground, and an extensive ramping system brings them to the center of the playstructure. Additionally, developmentally-appropriate and sensory-stimulating activities are incorporated throughout the play space. The playground consultant for this playground was RecWest Outdoor Products.

Biography Overlooking a beautiful, tranquil lake, Prado Regional Park’s unique Universally Accessible Playground design weaves elements of the lush natural landscape into its playful and cool design. Toddlers can sail away in their sturdy and fully-accessible boat while school-age children discover the lost Water Island in the shade of swaying palm trees. The park has a Zero-Depth Water Play Zone. There is a sensory wall that is embedded with water creatures (turtles, fish, frogs) that splash, ribbit, and squirt; while combining a variety of textures, running water, and sound. This is a Shane’s Inspiration playground. Prado Regional Park is a one-stop recreational paradise located in the Chino Valley basin where San Bernardino, Riverside, Orange and Los Angeles Counties connect. The park is loaded with outdoor recreation and adventure offering: Fishing, camping, hiking, biking and nature trails, disc golf, picnic facilities, two 18-hole golf courses, an Olympic shooting range, horseback riding, and archery.

Notes Brookside Park is is 61.1 acres. Pasadena’s largest fully maintained park facility located just south of the Rose Bowl Stadium. Extensive parking facilities are available off Arroyo Boulevard. The north section of the park contains one lighted regulation baseball diamond with seating for 4,200 and restrooms. The central section includes two lighted softball diamonds each with 240 seating capacity; a large, lighted multi-purpose field for flag football and soccer; a speaker’s platform with permanent seating; numerous picnic tables; play area; restrooms; and drinking fountains. Barbecue pits are available in most picnic areas. Biography It is located in the southeast corner of Brookside Park, just east of the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center. Beckoning with its pirate ship, Reese’s Retreat comes complete with ramps, a cannonball climber, an eight-bay swing set and sensory play structures that invite children to play with water and sand. The vast blue “ocean” provides a soft floor and easy access for users in wheelchairs and those with impaired mobility. The play area was designed in partnership with the Pasadena Public Works Department, Accessibility and Disability Commission, Recreation and Parks Commission, Shane’s Inspiration, Interplay Design, Recreation West Outdoor Products, and David Evans and Associates. Biography Renee’s Place has two play areas, one section for two to five-year-olds and another section for five to twelve-year-olds. Each play area has a swing set and shade structures. The UAP also has colorful resilient rubberized surfacing and benches embellished with whimsical artist created tiles. The five to twelve-year-old area is in the shape of a train. Sound features include a train engine, whistle and sound of a train going over tracks. Another special feature of the 17,000-square-foot playground is a foot path with a water element that will provide a unique sensory activity, complete with gentle mist. This is a Shane’s Inspiration Playground and the playground consultant was RecWest Outdoor Products.

Biography This is a Shane’s Inspiration playground manufactured by Landscape Structures. The playgrounds meet First 5 LA’s goals of developing new tot parks, improving existing parks and making them safe for children under the age of 5, and equipping neighborhood parks with specialized play equipment for children with special needs. The Department of Recreation and Parks and the Exceptional Children’s Foundation also collaborated on the playground at Ritchie Valens Park. This playground has many musical elements that are sure to make everyone smile. Children love the four-sided “On Stage/Jukebox/ Recording Studio” feature as well as a piece that children can enter and pretend to be tending a radio station. Turntables, levers, switches and the like keep a child’s attention for quite some time. This is NOT the Ranger Station on Santa Clara Street that is shaped strangely and hangs out over the river. From Southbound 101, take HW 87 South. Take the Taylor Street exit. Turn RIGHT on Taylor Street. Turn LEFT on Coleman Avenue. Turn LEFT into our facility at the Autumn Street intersection. Go straight towards the Rotary Children’s Playgarden, or hang a right to park closer to the Visitor Center. From 280, take HW 87 North. Take the Julian Street exit. Turn RIGHT on Julian and then LEFT on Market Street changes names to Coleman Avenue. Turn RIGHT at the light at Autumn and go straight towards the Rotary Children’s Playgarden, or hang a right to park closer to the Visitor Center. From 880, take the Coleman Street exit heading South towards downtown. The nearest Light Rail stops are St. James Street and Japantown/Ayer. Biography The Rotary PlayGarden, the Rotary Club of San Jose’s centennial gift to our community, opened in April 2015. The $6 million PlayGarden enables children with special needs to play alongside their siblings and friends and will be maintained by Guadalupe River Park Conservancy via volunteers, in-kind donations, and fee-for-service contracts. We will also build on our existing programming for children with special needs by offering seasonal after school and weekend programs in the PlayGarden. It is open daily from 10:00am to 6:30pm.

Biography The playground features two brightly colored, large climbing structures, swings, a sand table and a zip line, all of which can be accessed by kids of any ability. Centered between the pool and the baseball field at the Sepulveda Recreation Center, the sprawling play area is not fully enclosed, but it is surrounded by walking paths and plenty of grass, providing a safety net for those tots that tend to be runners. Travel and adventure is the theme of the new playground. The smaller of the two play structures is designed to look like a whimsical train. The rubber padded play-space is for the younger set, featuring tunnels, slides and low climbing walls at each train section, all connected by bridges. The larger play area resembles an airport tower, complete with an orange windsock fluttering from the top. A modern merry-go-round, a tall curved slide, a rope web, monkey bars and, a perenial playground favorite roller slide offer plenty to explore, but the real gem of this spot is the zip line. The second zip line features an accessible seat with a safety bar, so that anyone can enjoy the thrill of the ride. Notes Fully accessible restrooms are available Biography Shane’s Inspiration opened on September 21, 2000 in memory of Shane Williams who died of Spinal Muscular Atrophy. It was the first West Coast Universally Accessible Playground created by the Los Angeles Department of Recreation & Parks. This is a fully accessible disabled children’s playground (Universally Accessible Playground). This playground is located in Park Center of Griffith Park (across from the Merry-Go-Round. The Airplane: Cruise down the accessible “jet way” and take off on this jetliner. Pilot and co-pilot can manage the controls in the cockpit while checking their compass for direction. Accessible Slides: Immediately adjacent to the bottom of each slide is a landing pad, which gives with children mobility challenges the opportunity to depart the slide and comfortably. The Lucky Star Chaser: This space shuttle gives children of all abilities a chance to adventure into space. Ronald’s Ship of Dreams: Ronald’s Ship of Dreams, generously donated by Ronald McDonald House Charities, provides hours of imaginative play. Enter through the accessible “gangway” and explore the wheelhouse, complete with a talk tube radio system.

Three distinct age appropriate play areas have been designed to include a rubber surfaced play area for infants under the age of 2, a tot lot for pre-school age children (2-5 year olds), and an adventure play area for school age children (5-12 year olds). Unique play features are included in the design to create a sensory enriched accessible playground. Such unique play elements in the play areas include an adventure play equipment with access ramps and handrails, a tot lot play equipment with access ramps and handrails, a merry-go-around, swings, spring riders, group rocking units, self propelled spin play units, independent climbing apparatuses and play units with sound features. Brightly colored protective rubber play surfacing in shapes of different planets also add to the space theme. One focal point in the accessible playground is the decorative central seating area with seat walls and a colored sun pattern in the concrete paving which further enhance the solar galaxy theme. A 10-foot wide concrete walkway borders the entire accessible playground site and provides two entries into the accessible playground from 6th Street. This pathway can support persons in wheelchairs and pedestrians. Pathways have various colors and textures to again stimulate different senses. Additional security is provided by a 3-foot high decorative wall and ornamental metal fence that secures the west portion of the accessible playground by eliminating direct access from the playground to the adjacent street. Other amenities in the accessible playground include an art sculpture, raised planters, therapeutic gardens with various textured and scented plants, picnic tables, benches, trash receptacles, a drinking fountain, bike racks, flowering shrubs and groundcovers.

Biography San Francisco’s largest inclusive playground. The play area is located on the second terrace below the recreation center. The playground has a series of fantasy-inspiring decks, bridges and slides, and incorporates features throughout the park that facilitate play for children with physical, developmental and emotional disabilities.A climbing wall, an “Apollo Whirl” spinning cable structure and a multicolored play surface with colors representing land, water and earth are also new to the playground.

Biography This Shane’s Inspiration and Landscape Structure’s Playground opened in 2014. This is a pocket park, is unstaffed, and is open from dawn to dusk. This inclusive playground delivers a nature-inspired playground design, and even offers a custom treehouse-themed play structure. Plus, the extensive ramping system and rubberized playground safety surfacing will bring individuals using mobility devices to the center of the playground action. Biography This Riverside Homeowners Association features two different play areas. Sunset Park has a PlaySense® play structure designed for 2- to 5-year-olds, and Sun Canyon installed a PlaySense play structure for kids ages 5 to 12. Both play areas welcome children of all abilities. In addition to the inclusive play playground, swings were included to provide the high-flying fun that children crave.
