This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Biography Accessible from Mt. Airy and Westwood, Mt. Airy Forest’s 1,459 acres includes miles of hiking trails and bridle trails (located off Diehl Road) for horseback riders. Mt. Biography With the paved path leading to the playground this is a perfect handicap accessible area. The playground also has a smaller section with a large ramp with puzzles at the top of the ramp. Biography My Place includes all the features of a traditional playground such as swings and climbing equipment, but was constructed to allow those with disabilities to access every aspect of the facility. The playground, which opened in December 2009, is a privately funded project of the Leadership Historic Triangle Class of 2009. Biography The City of Scranton’s largest park, Nay Aug, grants residents and visitors a touch of nature amid the city landscape. Walking trails, picnic areas, kid-friendly rides, two (2) playgrounds, two (2) Olympic-sized swimming pools and waterslide complex number among the attractions. The Everhart Museum is also located within the park. A rock-strewn gorge and waterfalls add to the allure and have been named a National Natural Landmark. A pedestrian footbridge opens in 2007 to access parkland across the Roaring Brook untouched for many years. Nay Aug Park’s David Wenzel Tree house is the first of its kind in Pennsylvania, opened on Friday, May 25, 2007. It overlooks the gorge, rising an awesome 150 feet above. The tree house was constructed by Forever Young, Inc., with public and private donations and set the stage for additional tree house construction in other cities across the United States.

Biography This Shane’s Inspiration playground is surrounded by lush trees and the cries of animals, children can climb the alligators who rise up out of the surfacing or play with the gorillas and elephants who bask in the sun. The Neil Papiano Play Park (located in the upper zoo along the perimeter road) incorporates animal-themed climbing sculptures, large play structures, a toddler area, water misters, grassy landscaping, and a large picnic area. After exploring the real animals, children can hop onto the play pods or take a turn on the spinning disk, something that is critical in promoting balance for children with neurological disorders. Or take a trip down one of the textured slides, providing hours of fun and discovery under the shade of cool, colorful shade structures. The equipment is from Landscape Structures Inc and the playground consultant on this project was RecWest Outdoor Products. NOTE: You must pay admission to the LA Zoo to play at this playground.

Notes Park Features: 197 acres 4 lighted softball/baseball fields (no pitching mounds, concessions open during league play) 3 soccer fields (2 are lighted) 6 horseshoe pits 5 Bocce ball courts 18 hole disc golf course 3 shuffle board courses 2 lighted picnic shelters Concession stand Multi-purpose trail 3 playgrounds Sprayground (free to the public and operated seasonally) Restrooms Biography Nevin Park has many wonderful amenities to accommodate a wide variety of children with various abilities. The larger playground is modeled after a racetrack complete with cars and road! The rubberized playground surface is great for wheelchairs and walkers. The larger of the two playgrounds is divided into ages 2-5 and 5-12. Special care was taking in designing this playground in order to include a wide variety of textures and materials. Sensory equipment includes musical instruments, various moving bridges, and sensory wheels. The park also includes a large number of adapted swings. Mecklenburg County Parks and Rec says, “Inclusive playgrounds are for children of all abilities. The surface is appropriate for wheelchairs and walkers and the equipment is accessible via ramps. Adapted swings are appropriate for children who may still need the safety of a shoulder strap and high seat back. Inclusive playgrounds also contain sensory equipment such as equipment that provides unique visual, tactile, and auditory stimulation.”
