This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Even more, there are freestanding play components like playground swings and the OmniSpin® spinner encourage more play away from the main playground structures. Beilenson Park on Monday, June 9, 2008. The accessible playground at Beilenson Park has two separate play areas, one section for two to five-year-olds and two sections for five to twelve-year-olds. All of the areas have a “Maritime” theme and feature swings, ladders, a variety of balancing elements, climbers and slides. Special features to the 19,600-square-foot playground is an interactive drum play area and sensory wall. Other elements include spring toys, crawl tunnels, landscaping and drinking fountains. Enjoy the new 19,600-square-foot addition to a City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks facility in the San Fernando Valley – Lake Balboa. Included in the design is a lighthouse-themedLandscape Structures PlayBooster® playstructure, as well as other themed components throughout. Little ones can travel through a fun-filled, interactive maze while school-age kids slide, swing, and play with the animal artistry. Two zoo animals guard the entrance…ready to spray water at the touch of a button. For the more adventuresome, two “tree houses” provide hours of mystery and intrigue. The playground was made possible through the combined efforts of Councilmember Ed Reyes, the City of Los Angeles Recreation and Parks Department, and Shane’s Inspiration. Biography The playground is adjacent to Abilities United and close to the Mitchell Park Library. With seven zones specifically designed to accommodate the needs of all kinds of children, everyone will feel safe and included. The zones include: A music zone which includes: The 24-string laser harp in the Music Zone, created by artist Jen Lewin. When a user breaks one of the laser beams, the harp creates a sounds based on how quickly the person was moving and on the height of their hand (or wheelchair). The pleasing sounds of the laser harp are magical whether one or 50 are playing on it! A Swinging Zone includes accessible swing seats and bird nest swings. A Spinning zone includes a wheelchair accessible merry-go-round, a Cozy Cocoon, a rope climber that spins and other pieces. A Tot Zone A Pretend Play Zone includes a stage and treehouse A Sliding Zone which is a grassy hill with many different ways to get up to the top and many ways to slide back down. Some other the features include: A 2-story fully wheelchair-accessible playhouse and small theater; A kid-friendly stage, complete with costumes to get imaginations going; A magical treewalk that takes visitors through the trees as never before; Retreat areas throughout the playground for children with autism that get over-stimulated by traditional park experiences; Socially inclusive playground zones, specifically designed to make the park easy to navigate; Interactive music experiences to excite all musical interests and abilities; A “Kindness Corner” to ensure that our kids know that bullying has no place here, and will serve as a powerful reminder to be kind to those around us. Food is available from Ada’s Café at Mitchell Park. Visitors to the playground enjoy some of Ada’s delectable goodies through a cart, which is managed by disabled individuals, with the help of volunteers.

Notes Some play features include: The Airplane: Young pilots and co-pilots will enjoy a fully-accessible cockpit loaded with features. They can communicate with the Control Tower via a talk tube radio and plan their route on the navigation panels. Accessible Slides: The accessible slides lead to rubberized surfacing designed for children with mobility challenges. Sand Castle: Our Sand Castle is located a foot above the sand and features wide walkways throughout, allowing children of all abilities to scoop, build, and discover at elevated sand tables. Water Play: Water offers a wonderful sensory experience for all children but is denied to many children with disabilities. Biography The playground,located in South Los Angeles, has two play areas, one section for two to five-year-olds and another section for five to twelve-year-olds. Features include a swing set, sand play area and a half-height security fence to help provide a safe environment. The UAP also has resilient rubberized surfacing and shade structures for each play area. Biography This Shane’s Inspiration and Landscape Structure’s playground and splashpad opened in 2014. A medieval-themed playground was designed for kids ages 2 to 5 to encourage imaginative play. Kids of all abilities can storm the castle, congregate with knights at the round table and jump on the TuffRider® Horse for a quick getaway. Plus, kids ages 5 to 12 will stay active on the sports-themed PlayBooster® play structure. Components mimicking soccer balls, basketballs and baseballs help carry the theme throughout the play experience. There are textured slides for blind kids and metal slides for kids with cochlear ear implants. The ramps and pathways are wide enough for two wheelchairs to pass. Located in Hillcrest Park, the playground project was spearheaded by Concord resident Liz Lamach whose son, Matteo, uses a wheelchair and is blind. As a member of the City of Concord Parks, Recreation and Open Space Commission and the Lions Club of Contra Costa and Alameda Counties, Lamach brought people together to make Matteo’s dream of an accessible playground a reality. During the build that took place from April 20 to 29, 2007 over 2,000 volunteers constructed the massive playground, the largest in Concord covering an area a third the size of a football field. The playground incorporated many accessible elements allowing children with disabilities to play alongside able-bodied children. Accessible elements and fun features include: Wheelchair ramps allowing children in wheelchairs or walkers to be positioned on upper levels of the structure where they can “play on the colossal Rocking Boat and platform tree houses Visually impaired children have access to a sensory garden and tactile Alpine slide with three types of surfaces for children to feel High back swings Clear see through tunnel for autistic children who have difficulty transitioning from light to dark places. Low and high overhead ladders and sets of rings allow wheel chair access Large scale xylophone style instrument Water misters Aluminum slide was installed for children with cochlear implants. Static derived from plastic slides fry the surgically implanted cochlear devices. Slide surfaces stay cool even when temperatures exceed 90 degrees. Notes Hours: The park opens at sunrise and closes at sunset. Parking: $7 per vehicle for day use. Dogs: Permitted on leash no longer than 6′ in length. License required. Accessibility: Paved, wheelchair accessible trails, accessible playgrounds and picnic areas. Restrictions: Alcohol not allowed in park without a group picnic area reservation. This popular park in northwest Sonoma has fields for soccer and baseball, tennis and volleyball courts, an accessible playground and picnic sites, and 2.5 miles of nature trails winding through 40 acres of backcountry. Biography This Shane’s Inspiration playground is surrounded by lush trees and the cries of animals, children can climb the alligators who rise up out of the surfacing or play with the gorillas and elephants who bask in the sun. The Neil Papiano Play Park (located in the upper zoo along the perimeter road) incorporates animal-themed climbing sculptures, large play structures, a toddler area, water misters, grassy landscaping, and a large picnic area. After exploring the real animals, children can hop onto the play pods or take a turn on the spinning disk, something that is critical in promoting balance for children with neurological disorders. Or take a trip down one of the textured slides, providing hours of fun and discovery under the shade of cool, colorful shade structures. The equipment is from Landscape Structures Inc and the playground consultant on this project was RecWest Outdoor Products. NOTE: You must pay admission to the LA Zoo to play at this playground.

Biography Playground opened in 2012. From Silicon Valley Toddler–October 2013 Newhall Park in San Jose (tucked in where Newhall Street dead-ends into the Caltrain tracks, a few blocks from Santa Clara University). Though there are a few improvements that could be made at Newhall (the lack of baby swings is inexcusable!), overall this is a fun park with a wonderful play structure. If you live nearby, definitely give it a try. Here are the details: Pros The toddler-friendly modern play structure has a ton of fun features, including a low/medium height roller slide (one of the only roller slides I’ve found in the area — Toddler X loves it), and a tall twisty slide. Structure is accessible via ramps as well as steps, so it’s a good one for the youngest, truly toddling toddlers (provided there aren’t rowdy big kids running around). The only two high gaps on the play structure that pose a fall concern are right next to each other, so if you position yourself wisely, the structure becomes relatively safe. (See photo above, top right.) The whole play area features the squishy ground surface that I love — no sand or tanbark to be found! Big kid swings and a bucket swing, as well as a spring bumblebee toy, round out the playground offerings. Well-maintained grassy fields, surrounded by a nice loop path for tricycles or scooters. Easy street parking on Newhall (since it’s a dead end, it’s never busy). Usually it’s very sparsely populated, which is nice. Though it occasionally gets crowded in the evenings or on weekends, the structure is large enough that there’s generally plenty of room for everyone. Playground isn’t fenced, but park as a whole is, with only three (not gated) entry points. With the Caltrain tracks just a hundred yards away and the airport nearby, there is no shortage of plane and train sightings — a huge bonus for vehicle-loving toddlers. Cons As mentioned above, no baby swings. This really bums Toddler X out. The big plastic swing is just not intended for toddlers. (See picture above, bottom right.) The big kid/bucket swings are located too close to the play structure for my comfort — I’ve seen numerous near-collisions when younger kids run over to the swings. You do need to keep an eye on your toddler. There are no separate structures/play areas for older and younger kids — just the one main structure, rated for ages 5-12 (but, like I said, overall relatively toddler-friendly). As a result, the play environment on the structure differs greatly depending on how old the rest of the playground patrons are during your visit. We’ve never had a real problem, but I feel a lot more relaxed when the oldest kid on the structure is 5, rather than 10. No bathrooms, and very little shade in the park as a whole (none on the playground itself).

Biography Buckle in and rocket to the moon at the space-themed Universally Accessible Playground at Parque De Los Sueños in East Los Angeles. This colorful planetary play space features an interactive shuttle with movable controls, steering instruments, and wide wings for climbing. Older astronauts can go for a space walk along sturdy netting and while hubs provide the ideal gathering places for interplanetary chatting and stargazing through periscopes. A fully-accessible 3-foot-high maze provides hours of active and imaginative play. And for children with developmental delays, sound pucks embedded in the playground encourage auditory discovery. Biography Read the blogs about this amazing playground and see great pictures: OCmom blog Fun Orange County Parks Pavion Park Playground is about universal play, and providing fun activities and equal access for all, including children and caregivers of all ages and abilities. The City of Mission Viejo contracted RJM to update its old playground with an emphasis on Universal design. The park retained its original features such as a Braille wall and dedicated off-street accessible parking, while adding new features that include a rubberized surface with footprints/signage of indigenous animals from adjacent Oso Creek, and new equipment that reinforces the universal-design principles. The park includes a wide variety of accessible play equipment including a main tree house with slides and accessible ramps and interactive boards, rocking boat that fits a wheel chair, accessible sand diggers, spinners, swings that are equipped with harness/support to protect a child’s neck, and interactive light/sound games. Shade trees surround the playground, and benches and chairs face one another and are embedded throughout the playground to encourage visitors to interact.
