This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Biography Karst features the Splashpad water play area, the huge Playscape accessible playground, a disc golf course, and a fenced dog park in addition to the Commons rental building, several picnic shelters, smaller playgrounds, and athletic fields. Walking trails circle the arboretum and extend into the natural forested sections of the park, where there are a couple of ponds.

The goal of Kayla’s Playground is to offer the most accessible equipment on the market to date. There are many transfer areas and raised platforms to access slides and equipment. Another piece of accessible equipment on Kayla’s playground is the Merry-Go-Round, which does not require a key and is accessible by 2 wheelchair users.

Biography The playground that opened in September 2022 includes a 2-5-year-old and 5-12 year old areas. Both areas have ramped structures with sensory pieces. The playground includes a group swing, an accessible glider, and an accessible whirl. The playground includes sensory play pieces for children, spaces for solitude, wide ramps for wheelchairs to easily accompany youth onto pieces, diverse seating options allowing wheelchairs or walkers to easily access, safe and soft flooring for transition from piece to piece seamless and safe, and versatile pieces that allow individuals with or without upper/lower mobility to still experience the play features. Biography The playground built by volunteers opened in 2015. Located at 31st Street & 14th Avenue on Kenosha’s north side, Petzke Park is a City of Kenosha park. It includes: Pour-in-place rubber surfacing A picket fence with one entry. A ramping system Swings: accessible swing seats, Liberty Swing (requires a key to operate – contact Public Works for more information), group swing Wheelchair accessible merry-go-round Monkey bars, climbing walls and slides in varying heights and configurations whimsical musical instruments mosaic artwork braille and sign language displays. You’ll also find a number of fun replicas of Kenosha icons including two lighthouses, a ship, streetcar and an AMC Rambler car.

Biography The playground opened in May 2022. Some of the inclusive structures in the playground include a Sensory Wave climber, shaded musical instruments, wheelchair-accessible turf and ramps, and inclusive swings, slides, and zip line. The playground cost about $1 million, and it is intended to bring kids with disabilities together with friends by featuring play equipment that all kids can enjoy together.

Biography KC2 is an all-inclusive playground, sensory garden and outdoor classroom. The community did fundraisers, wrote grants and help fund the project using Community Development Corporation funds. After two community build days the project is now complete and we will host a community-wide grand opening on Friday, May 10th, 2013 Kids Colony 2 is a playground for all children of all abilities in our community and surrounding area!1 acre of playground area with new playground equipment and pavilion with plenty of seating for parents. Phase II of Kids Colony 2 is a community-built all-inclusive playground, sensory garden and outdoor learning center planned to be built in early spring 2013. The theme of Phase II is Pioneer Town with a school house, cotton gin, bank, general store and jail. Plus a little house on the prairie. There will be native plants with interpretive signs and lots of fun! This play structure replaced the much beloved Kids Colony that was community built in 1993. These are the playground renderings. Notes World Renowned Mount Trashmore Park encompasses 165 acres and is comprised of two man-made mountains, two lakes, two playgrounds, a skate park and vert ramp, and multi-use paths. The main mountain, Mount Trashmore, now 60 feet in height and 800 feet long, was created by compacting layers of solid waste and clean soil. Recognized for its environmental feat, this former land fill features a water-wise garden that boasts xeriscaping, where you can enjoy a beautiful garden that requires minimal water. The park also features a smaller mountain, Encore Hill, and two lakes. Lake Windsor (located along South Blvd.) is brackish water fed by Thalia Creek. Lake Trashmore (located along Edwin Drive) is freshwater and hosts various species of fish. Fishing is permitted from land only and requires a license. Fishers must adhere to all State regulations regarding creel and size limits. No boats, swimming or wading is allowed in the lakes. Biography The Kids Cove Playground at Mount Trashmore Park opened in December 2010. At nearly 26,000 square feet, the playground is comprised of three distinct play areas built on a rubber surface: a giant play structure that includes a multitude of slides, elevated walkways, climbers and more; an area that has swings for all ages; and an area comprised of a variety of climbing structures. Biography It is wood playground with steps, bridges, monkey bars, rope ladders, shaky platforms and more. There is only one entrance and exit, making it easier to keep track of children. There is a separate Tot Lot area with small steps, a slide, a sandbox, monkey bars and large wooden cars to “drive.” The playground is nicely shaded. Notes Located on Route 10 across from Cheshire High School, Bartlem Recreation Area was named for the Town’s first Recreation director, Richard C. Bartlem who served as Director from 1968-1993. Park amenities include the Community Pool, a 90 foot baseball diamond, soccer, lacrosse, Kids In Motion playscape, a pavilion, picnic area, community gardens and skate park. Biography 38,000 square feet and is understood to be the largest in Connecticut. This fully accessible poured-in-place surfacing, a Kidrox Climber, a Double Webscape and a Playworld Music Center. In addition, there is a drinking fountain and picnic area, Cool Topper Sails for lots of shade and a gated fence to keep children safe.

Biography Located at the trail head of St. Tammany Trace, the Kids Konnection Playground was designed based on the theory of “parallel play,” which means that individuals with and without disabilities can play side by side. The Americans with Disabilities Act requires 50 percent handicap accessibility. The Kids Konnection Boundless Playground is 70 percent handicap accessible. The fence and gates offer added safety for parents of all children. The surfacing of the playground provides added safety and accessibility. It is “latex free,” allowing individuals with Spina Bifida to play without the worry of exposure to latex. The Roller Slide was added to the design to offer a slide that individuals with Cochlear implants could enjoy. The Sway Fun offers a safe alternative for individuals in a wheelchair to experience swinging The playground provides sensory experiences with sand, plants and sound. Individuals who are hearing or sight impaired or those with autism can benefit greatly from these sensory centers. Kids Konnection Playground Hours: 7 days a week (except closed for ½ day Christmas Eve, all day Christmas Day & Thanksgiving Day) 8 am – 5 pm November, December, January, February 8 am – 6 pm March, April, September, October 8 am – 7 pm May, June, July, August CLOSED every MONDAY morning until 11:00am for maintenance

Biography The mission of Kids’ Park Lafayette is to provide a safe, accessible, learning and recreational environment to people of ALL ages and ALL abilities. There are two accessible playgrounds divided by age groups. In addition to the accessible playgrounds, there is an accessible Sensory Botanical Garden on the grounds of Lafayette Elementary School which stimulates the senses through use of flowers and plants (sight and smell), musical instruments, chimes, and seed pods (hearing), textured plants (touch), and edible herbs (taste).

The extensive use of landscaping features – trees, plants and rolling hills – makes Kids Together Playground unique and inviting for all generations of visitors at all times of the year. Plants at KTP have been specially chosen to be child-friendly, with a stimulating variety of colors, textures and fragrances. Art for Play As Kids Together raised funds for playground construction, another community group, Cary Visual Art, joined the effort by commissioning and funding artwork for Kids Together Playground. This added dimension was the perfect complement and brought even greater opportunities for kids to explore creative and imaginative play. By expressing their interest and commitment during the design phase, Cary Visual Art was able to work with our design team to reserve spaces for functional art. KATAL – by William Moore, Pittsboro, NC This multi-piece sculpture invites children of all ages to climb aboard. There’s an especially cozy spot in the curl of KATAL’s tail! CVA held a contest for children to name the sculpture and KATAL was born, as an acronym for Kids Are Together At Last. Many children identify KTP as “the Dragon Park”. This wonderful sculpture also inspired the Kids Together mascot. Oracle Benches and Dinosaur Bench – by Jim Gallucci, Greensboro, NC The oracle bench invites interactive fun – whisper into one trumpet-shaped tube, and your friend on the other end can hear you! It’s designed so wheelchair-users can play, too. The bright purple dinosaur bench adds color and a resting place near the toddler swings. Botanical Benches – by Rodney Carroll, Baltimore, MD Giant, aluminum leaves decorate these four benches, each one accurately representing the leaves of a different tree – gingko, sassafras, redbud and tulip poplar. Biography “Cobb Park (Kidscape Village I & II) was my winner simply because it has several different play structures for all ages and abilities – most of which were updated within the last 4 years. One of those playgrounds is fully wheelchair accessible and includes swings with additional support for those children who need it. Whether your child wants to climb, hang, spin, swing, or slide there are multiple areas for them in this 5.8 acre park. Large umbrellas provide a bit of shade on the play structures for the kids, though the parents are mostly left out in the sun despite the many mature trees in the area. The toddler playground seems to get the best shade. There is a pavilion with picnic tables and the restrooms are somewhat close, depending on where you are in the park (they’re in the concession building near the baseball field). As if that’s not enough, there is a very small play area on the opposite side of the park (on Bank Street) that is for young toddlers. It has a playhouse, a variation on a merry go round, swings, small slides, and a “hive” climbing structure. There are 2 potential downsides: first the park is open on 3 sides: to the parking lot on one side, and to low traffic roads on the other 2 sides. However, it’s large enough that accidentally running out to the road is not really a problem. The other issue is that it is across the street from Campbell High School and when school lets out there is an influx of teens trying to sneak a cigarette before going home and releasing some pent up energy. Separate Playgrounds: 3 play structures (toddlers, 5+, and the wheelchair accessible one), 3 separate swing areas, multiple netted climbing areas, rock wall and train…and that’s not including the additional playground on the far side of the park described above! Ground: Mulch throughout most of the playground, rubber on the wheelchair accessible playground and swings.
