This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Biography This Shane”s Inspiration playground has a nautical theme with tall, mast like umbrellas covering a boat decorated with a huge proud pelican at the bow. Wheelchair accessible ramps lead up into the hull where you can find a rotating rain gauge, musical knobs to turn, slides, stairs and ropes to climb down to the rubber coated flooring at ground level. A black 20-foot, humpback whale sits in the giant sandpit and keeps the massive swimming turtle sculpture company. Beneath the sand there is a discovery pool for little fingers to explore. Other wonderfully whimsical features of the park include a large rock abacus, a musical wind chime and rocking seahorses to ride. The equipment is from Landscape Structures and the playground consultant on this project was RecWest Outdoor Products.

Biography Maryland State Parks have thirty-three accessible playgrounds across the state. All have been designed for children between the ages of 5 to 12 years of age. The ADA Access Specialist within MDNR Engineering/Construction, who also serves on MDNR Disabilities Advisory Council, indicated that the following playgrounds meet the Let Kids Play criteria for inclusion in this directory. You can find a map of each park by clicking on the park name. For more information about additional accessibility amenities such as cabins, camp sites, hunting areas, fishing piers, boat ramps, trails, picnic areas, and other adaptive recreation equipment, visit their Marylands’ Accessibility for All website. The playground is located across from the accessible North Comfort Station and near the accessible Lake Bath House with numerous accessible Picnic Pads with accessible Tables. Greenbrier State Park offers an accessible visitors’ center and campsites as well as the availability of a beach wheelchair. The park is located in Boonsboro.

Notes Park Features: 4 acres 2 baseball fields Basketball court Picnic shelter with six picnic tables and 2 grills Playground 3 Horseshoe pits Biography Grier Heights Neighborhood Park is an inclusive park with many different features. All of the equipment is in mulched beds with ramps allowing access for wheelchairs and walkers. The largest of the climbers is accessible via ramp. There is an assortment of different sensory equipment at this park including bouncing equipment, sensory panels, and a swinging bridge. There is also a large area of equipment designed for strengthening exercises making this a perfect location for therapy session. Mecklenburg County Parks and Rec says, “Inclusive playgrounds are for children of all abilities. The surface is appropriate for wheelchairs and walkers and the equipment is accessible via ramps. Adapted swings are appropriate for children who may still need the safety of a shoulder strap and high seat back. Inclusive playgrounds also contain sensory equipment such as equipment that provides unique visual, tactile, and auditory stimulation.” *Note: The playground surface is a combination of pour-in-place rubber and wood mulch (EWF) which may make it more difficult for a person using a wheelchair to maneuver through the playground.*

Biography The playground is open to the public during non-school hours. The manufacturer of the equipment is Landscape Structures. The playground includes: an EVOS structure, a roller slide, a Sway Fun, belt swings and an accessible swing seat, a sand play area, and a climbing net. There is a beautiful building just outside the fencing that houses bathrooms and kid size picnic tables. There’s also a port-a-john for days when that building is closed. The playground has two large new structures with a gazillion climbing options and really fun slides and bridges and all sorts of things to explore. There are a ton of swings including two fun tire swings.
