This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Included are rubber surfaces, wheelchair-accessible ramps, age-appropriate play structures for children 5-12, and safety signs in Braille and Spanish. It also features several slides and imaginary play components, along with climbing and balancing activities — including a play wall that simulates rock-climbing in a special physical challenge area of the playground sponsored by Sanofi-Synthelabo. Biography The new playground which replaced the one that burned down in 2008 features a pirate ship and a castle. The ship is for 2-5 year olds, and the castle is for 6-12 year olds. Both are ramped making it easily accessible for everyone. The playground includes many interactive panels including music chimes, drums, and gears to spin. There are 4 bench swings and 2 baby swings.

Biography This engaging Universally Accessible Playground centers on a ship theme, providing an accessible Control Central, complete with two balconies with steering wheels to navigate! These steering ports offer children with disabilities the opportunity to sail side-by-side with their peers. A maze panel, which is accessed from the deck and the ground level, also facilitates interaction while honing fine motor skills. For the more adventuresome, a pod walk, which helps develop balance and depth perception, provides a short cut to the Engine Room. After setting your course, you can relax with your friends in the Living Quarters of the good ship SS WilshireCrest. Or why not challenge your co-captain to a friendly game of tic-tac-toe? A signing panel gives all mates the chance to learn a new language while bright talk tubes let you stay in close contact with the Engine Room.

Beilenson Park on Monday, June 9, 2008. The accessible playground at Beilenson Park has two separate play areas, one section for two to five-year-olds and two sections for five to twelve-year-olds. All of the areas have a “Maritime” theme and feature swings, ladders, a variety of balancing elements, climbers and slides. Special features to the 19,600-square-foot playground is an interactive drum play area and sensory wall. Other elements include spring toys, crawl tunnels, landscaping and drinking fountains. Enjoy the new 19,600-square-foot addition to a City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks facility in the San Fernando Valley – Lake Balboa. Included in the design is a lighthouse-themedLandscape Structures PlayBooster® playstructure, as well as other themed components throughout. A Sway Fun® glider, swings, climbers and slides offer lots of sensory experiences. The playground consultant on this project was RecWest Outdoor Products.

Notes Some play features include: The Airplane: Young pilots and co-pilots will enjoy a fully-accessible cockpit loaded with features. They can communicate with the Control Tower via a talk tube radio and plan their route on the navigation panels. Accessible Slides: The accessible slides lead to rubberized surfacing designed for children with mobility challenges. Sand Castle: Our Sand Castle is located a foot above the sand and features wide walkways throughout, allowing children of all abilities to scoop, build, and discover at elevated sand tables. Water Play: Water offers a wonderful sensory experience for all children but is denied to many children with disabilities. Biography The playground,located in South Los Angeles, has two play areas, one section for two to five-year-olds and another section for five to twelve-year-olds. Notes Features: Interactive Maze Accessible Slides Accessible Swings Water Play Two “Tree Houses” Biography This 10,000-square-foot playground’s colorful zoo and carousel theme draws on historic community landmarks, enchanting adults and children. Little ones can travel through a fun-filled, interactive maze while school-age kids slide, swing, and play with the animal artistry. Two zoo animals guard the entrance…ready to spray water at the touch of a button. For the more adventuresome, two “tree houses” provide hours of mystery and intrigue. The playground was made possible through the combined efforts of Councilmember Ed Reyes, the City of Los Angeles Recreation and Parks Department, and Shane’s Inspiration. Notes The park features: colorful slides tubes bridges adapted swings interactive puzzles a quiet area a dragon mister a Sway Fun Biography Children with and without special needs are invited to the Everychild Foundation Universally Accessible Playground at Los Angeles Orthopaedic Hospital. This bright and safe play area provides children with integrated play opportunities through specially-designed playground equipment with sensory features. Opened in February 2008, the Playground accommodates children with wheelchairs, leg braces, crutches and other barriers that would otherwise leave them confined to the sidelines at traditional playgrounds. The Playground provides a colorful, safe and stimulating outdoor haven for children in the community — regardless of their physical limits — to come together, play and learn from each other. The nearly half-acre play area features special equipment in a modern and creative environment. The Playground has sturdy foam ground cover to protect children from falls and yet is wheelchair-friendly. The park features a wonderland of brightly colored slides, tubes, bridges, swings, interactive puzzles, a quiet area and lush landscaping for children ages 2 to 12. A water feature shoots columns of water up from the ground while a whimsical blue-eyed red dragon puffs clouds of mist down toward children, which is especially useful on hot days. A gently sloping ramp includes motion sensors that, when triggered, set off musical chimes. Through a joint-use agreement with the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, the playground is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week (except holidays), with maintenance and security provided by the city. This is a Shane’s Inspiration Playground done in collaboration with RecWest Outdoor Products. Special Saturday Play Dates Hosted by Support Groups The Everychild Foundation Universally Accessible Playground at Los Angeles Orthopaedic Hospital offers free Saturday “Play Dates” with coordinated activities including face painting, arts and crafts, entertainment, and treats (but please feel free to bring a sack lunch). LAOH support groups Las Niñas and Juniors/Pinafores host these events that offer members opportunities to volunteer.

Notes Brookside Park is is 61.1 acres. Pasadena’s largest fully maintained park facility located just south of the Rose Bowl Stadium. Extensive parking facilities are available off Arroyo Boulevard. The north section of the park contains one lighted regulation baseball diamond with seating for 4,200 and restrooms. The central section includes two lighted softball diamonds each with 240 seating capacity; a large, lighted multi-purpose field for flag football and soccer; a speaker’s platform with permanent seating; numerous picnic tables; play area; restrooms; and drinking fountains. Barbecue pits are available in most picnic areas. Biography It is located in the southeast corner of Brookside Park, just east of the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center. Beckoning with its pirate ship, Reese’s Retreat comes complete with ramps, a cannonball climber, an eight-bay swing set and sensory play structures that invite children to play with water and sand. The vast blue “ocean” provides a soft floor and easy access for users in wheelchairs and those with impaired mobility. The play area was designed in partnership with the Pasadena Public Works Department, Accessibility and Disability Commission, Recreation and Parks Commission, Shane’s Inspiration, Interplay Design, Recreation West Outdoor Products, and David Evans and Associates. There are textured slides for blind kids and metal slides for kids with cochlear ear implants. The ramps and pathways are wide enough for two wheelchairs to pass. Located in Hillcrest Park, the playground project was spearheaded by Concord resident Liz Lamach whose son, Matteo, uses a wheelchair and is blind. As a member of the City of Concord Parks, Recreation and Open Space Commission and the Lions Club of Contra Costa and Alameda Counties, Lamach brought people together to make Matteo’s dream of an accessible playground a reality. During the build that took place from April 20 to 29, 2007 over 2,000 volunteers constructed the massive playground, the largest in Concord covering an area a third the size of a football field. The playground incorporated many accessible elements allowing children with disabilities to play alongside able-bodied children. Accessible elements and fun features include: Wheelchair ramps allowing children in wheelchairs or walkers to be positioned on upper levels of the structure where they can “play on the colossal Rocking Boat and platform tree houses Visually impaired children have access to a sensory garden and tactile Alpine slide with three types of surfaces for children to feel High back swings Clear see through tunnel for autistic children who have difficulty transitioning from light to dark places. Low and high overhead ladders and sets of rings allow wheel chair access Large scale xylophone style instrument Water misters Aluminum slide was installed for children with cochlear implants. Static derived from plastic slides fry the surgically implanted cochlear devices. Slide surfaces stay cool even when temperatures exceed 90 degrees. Many children with physical disabilities are denied the age-old tradition of digging in the sand because their wheelchairs can’t negotiate most sand play areas. The Sand Castle is located a foot above the sand and features wide walkways throughout, allowing children of all abilities to scoop, build, and discover at elevated sand tables. There are water sprays coming from three misters, which are connected to the play equipment, offers hours of fun and a great way to beat the heat at the playground. Water provides a wonderful sensory experience for all children but is denied to many children with disabilities. This is a Shane’s Inspiration Playground.
