This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Biography The playground, which opened in 2015, has open space to encourage running and jumping as well as playground structures that are inspired by nature. It’s designed for children of all abilities, including those in wheelchairs and those with autism. The playground is designed for children aged three to ten. The playground is open to the community on weekends and night weekdays. The playground is connected to a 2.5-acre DNR-certified school forest, which encourages kids to play with sand, rocks, leaves and logs. St. David’s Center officials say that playing and exploring the outdoors is an important part of the learning experience for kids at the center.

Biography Playground opened in 2014. The surfacing is a combination of Sof Tiles and wood mulch (EWF) which may make it more difficult for some people to maneuver throughout the entire playground. Equipment includes: ramped structure, accessible glider, different spinners, benches, a variety of slides (including a metal one), musical instruments, swings with accessible swing seats, a group swing, cozy places for children who get overwhelmed.

Biography Opened in 2014. Ramps allow access to 1,600 square feet of solid surface for walking, running and rolling. Includes a wheelchair-accessible rocking ship, slides, music, Braille and telescope panels, plus independent play areas.

Biography The Discovery Garden is located next to the Red Wing Area Universal Playground at Colvill Park. The Discovery Garden is a wheelchair-accessible raised bed garden for children and people of all ages and abilities. The garden was created to please all the senses and we encourage every visitor to not only look, but to stop and smell, touch and even listen to the plants. There are nine gardens that make up the Discovery Garden. The four outside gardens are each planted with two colors: The Ladybug Garden (red/pink), the Moon Garden (silver/white), The Sun Garden (yellow/orange) and the Water Garden (blue/purple). The other gardens are: The Fragrance Garden, the Faerie Garden, the Butterfly & Hummingbird Garden, the Cook’s Garden and the Rainbow Garden. Their website has a video showing how they built the Discovery Garden, a brochure describing how the garden was conceived, and a drawing of the garden layout.

Biography The universal access playground which opened in 2014 includes an Omni Spin, double slides, a roller table, double wide ramps on the ramped structure,accessible swing seats, interactive play panels, music and nets under the ramps for hanging out. The wading pool features a waterfall and spray structure that looks like the rock of the river bluffs; benches surround the tree-shaded pool. Biography In 2017, when it opened, The Willmar Destination Playground was the largest fully accessible playground in the five-state area, at just under 20,000 square feet. It was also the third-largest such playground in the United States. Throughout the site, there are swings, slides, a zip line, spider bouncer, monkey bars and even misters for those hot days. Children can also play on musical instruments, climb through a fantasy castle and pretend to be the conductor of a BNSF locomotive. There is a Liberty Swing and wheelchair-accessible merry-go-round.

There is also a community produced mosaic mural created under the direction of local artist Claire Witt. NOTE: They are still raising funds for pour-in-place surfacing. Currently all of the surfacing is wood mulch.
