This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Biography The Inclusive Playground is located in the Knoll and Eucalyptus area of the park. The accessible playground was built by theAmerican Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons as part of their annual meeting, in partnership with KaBOOM! In addition to wheelchair ramps, the playground features braille signs, a scent garden, a swing with a full-body harness and extra wide slides that can accommodate parents holding children.

Biography Students at Curtis School in Los Angeles, Calif., are connected with nature during recess each day. The school is home to a nature-inspired playground with PlayOdyssey® Tower, Netplex® and PlayBooster® playstructures. Elements like Palm Tree Accent post toppers, the custom tower roof and wood-grain panels provide more of the natural playground theme. Biography This is the 28th universally accessible and inclusive playground to be developed by Shane’s Inspiration and the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks. The equipment was built by Landscape Structures and features a sea-creatures theme. The playground incorporates some musical elements for kids to engage with. There is plenty of parking and a ton of space for running around. The tot park is separate from the main play equipment. This playground is not fenced. Biography This Shane’s Inspiration playground includes colorful, sensory-rich equipment such as musical instruments, buttons that emit sounds and chime panels, and swings or see-saws with high backs offer support. Canopies over the structures don’t just provide shade, but offer protection to those sensitive to heat or light because of medication. The equipment is from Landscape Structures and the playground consultant on this project was RecWest Outdoor Products.

Biography This playground opened in 1956. Construction started in 1952 and was the brainchild of Archer Garner and Hank Ketcham, the creator of the famous Dennis The Menace comic strip. While the playground is not 100% accessible, much of it is and it includes a quiet area in the form of a maze. The playground has been updated several times since it opened and new inclusive play pieces have been added. While much of the original playground still exists, there are a lot of opportunities for inclusive play. The playground has many benches for parents to supervise and is fenced all around. This playground was ahead of its time and is a definite favorite among local children. Notes The park features: colorful slides tubes bridges adapted swings interactive puzzles a quiet area a dragon mister a Sway Fun Biography Children with and without special needs are invited to the Everychild Foundation Universally Accessible Playground at Los Angeles Orthopaedic Hospital. This bright and safe play area provides children with integrated play opportunities through specially-designed playground equipment with sensory features. Opened in February 2008, the Playground accommodates children with wheelchairs, leg braces, crutches and other barriers that would otherwise leave them confined to the sidelines at traditional playgrounds. The Playground provides a colorful, safe and stimulating outdoor haven for children in the community — regardless of their physical limits — to come together, play and learn from each other. The nearly half-acre play area features special equipment in a modern and creative environment. The Playground has sturdy foam ground cover to protect children from falls and yet is wheelchair-friendly. The park features a wonderland of brightly colored slides, tubes, bridges, swings, interactive puzzles, a quiet area and lush landscaping for children ages 2 to 12. A water feature shoots columns of water up from the ground while a whimsical blue-eyed red dragon puffs clouds of mist down toward children, which is especially useful on hot days. A gently sloping ramp includes motion sensors that, when triggered, set off musical chimes. Through a joint-use agreement with the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, the playground is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week (except holidays), with maintenance and security provided by the city. This is a Shane’s Inspiration Playground done in collaboration with RecWest Outdoor Products. Special Saturday Play Dates Hosted by Support Groups The Everychild Foundation Universally Accessible Playground at Los Angeles Orthopaedic Hospital offers free Saturday “Play Dates” with coordinated activities including face painting, arts and crafts, entertainment, and treats (but please feel free to bring a sack lunch). LAOH support groups Las Niñas and Juniors/Pinafores host these events that offer members opportunities to volunteer.

Notes Features: Tot area Mini Climbing Wall Musical Instruments Sensory Wall Splash Fountain Carousel Biography This extraordinary playground has a carousel theme. The playground includes a tot lot for smaller children, an older children’s play area with a mini climbing wall and slide, and drums to beat and bells to ring. The Century Wall that has sounds and a panel on the floor so you can play music with your feet. This unique playground was made by Landscape Structures and Coast Recreation. The area has a splash fountain and a carousel for children. The park also includes handicap accessible rental paddle boats.

Biography This Shane”s Inspiration playground has a nautical theme with tall, mast like umbrellas covering a boat decorated with a huge proud pelican at the bow. Wheelchair accessible ramps lead up into the hull where you can find a rotating rain gauge, musical knobs to turn, slides, stairs and ropes to climb down to the rubber coated flooring at ground level. A black 20-foot, humpback whale sits in the giant sandpit and keeps the massive swimming turtle sculpture company. Beneath the sand there is a discovery pool for little fingers to explore. Other wonderfully whimsical features of the park include a large rock abacus, a musical wind chime and rocking seahorses to ride. The equipment is from Landscape Structures and the playground consultant on this project was RecWest Outdoor Products.

Biography The park is home to a sprawling, inclusive PlayBooster® playstructure. With an extensive ramping system, children of all abilities are able to access nearly every point on the playground. They can reach the crawl tunnels, many different slides and play panels, and other fun playground components. Additionally, custom roofs and CoolToppers® shade systems provide protection from harmful UV rays. The playground equipment is from Landscape Structures Inc and was built by RecWest Outdoor Products. This playground was done in collaboration with Shane’s Inspiration.

Biography This Shane’s Inspiration and Landscape Structure’s Playground opened in 2014. Kids of all ages and abilities can go under the sea at this playground. This park delivers yellow submarine- and sealife-themed PlayBooster® play structures that are fully inclusive with ramps, the Sway Fun® glider, Roller Table, Cozy Dome® and lots of sensory-rich activity panels.
