This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Notes Park Features: A “Boundless Playground”–swings, music area, sand and water play Splash Pad Shelters Baseball Basketball Paved Walking Trail Skate Park Biography In September of 2009, a 10,000 square foot playground was assembled at the park in one day by volunteers from CVS Pharmacy. The playground was built with a $225,000 grant from CVS Caremark/All Kids Can and Boundless Playgrounds. The playground is fully accessible to people of all abilities and features a poured rubber surface making for easy maneuvering. The playground has ADA wide ramps, a variety of play equipment, swings with zero-G seats, tot seats and open seats, many climbing features, music play area, a sandlot with backhoes (one accessible), sand and water tables and other fun features, plus many swinging benches and covered tables to watch your kids play! The sprayground at Clippard Park will be open Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend from 11 AM – 7 PM daily. It features a variety of motion activated features for all to enjoy plus a nice shaded picnic table for those who prefer to stay dry. Clippard Park has a paved walking trail that is 1/2 a mile long. A natural trail winds through the woods behind Shelter C adding another 1/4 mile. Park Access Springdale Road to north on Season Drive. Turn left on Pottinger Road and another Left on Dewhill Lane to the Park Entrance. Colerain Avenue to east on Redskin Drive (in between Outback Steakhouse and Frisch’s back entrance/exit). Turn left on Fairglen Drive. Fairglen dead-ends at the side entrance of Clippard Park. Visiting from out of the Area: If you are visiting the park from outside of Colerain Township and are not familiar with the area, take the Colerain Avenue exit off of I-275 and go south on Colerain Avenue and continue with the directions above. Notes The Multigenerational Park and Universally Accessible Playground is home to historic Stearns Tavern, one of the oldest buildings in Worcester. Plans include to eventually have accessible bathrooms for individuals with disability. Dedicated in honor of the late State Representative John J. Binienda, Binienda Beach (formerly Coes Pond Beach) includes a bathhouse, swimming area and sandy beach, perfect for family outdoor activities. The beach is located on the western side of Coes Reservoir and serves as the headwaters of the Blackstone River. During the summer months, visitors can rent kayaks, paddle boats and paddle boards. Coes Reservoir is annually stocked with trout and is a favorite fishing spot among the locals. Non-motorized watercraft is allowed and informal launch sites are available at the John Binienda Memorial Beach and at the end of Circuit Avenue North. Biography Coes Park, opened in 2017 is a multi-generational, universally accessible playground off Mill Street, on the banks of Coes Pond. The park is sectioned into two, fenced in areas–one for the bigger kids and one for the littles although the younger ones can find lots to do and explore in the older kid’s area making this a great park for siblings. You will find a musical play area, “rock climbing” area, parent and child swings, lots of equipment for climbing and beautiful spots to enjoy a picnic. The wide paths, special play equipment, and rubber surface make the park accessible for those in wheelchairs and grandparents with walkers can enjoy getting up close to their grandchildren playing. It’s truly a park for everybody. The park provides recreational opportunities (passive and active), support facilities, ADA accessible walkways, a scenic overlook area, benches, landscape plantings, kiosks and signage. It includes 57 playground features, all of which are accessible. There also is a sledding hill, so you can have fun here all year-round!

The equipment includes climbers, tube and traditional slides, and a climbing wall. This park also includes bathrooms and both traditional and adapted swings. Mecklenburg County Parks and Rec says, “Inclusive playgrounds are for children of all abilities. The surface is appropriate for wheelchairs and walkers and the equipment is accessible via ramps. Adapted swings are appropriate for children who may still need the safety of a shoulder strap and high seat back. Inclusive playgrounds also contain sensory equipment such as equipment that provides unique visual, tactile, and auditory stimulation.” *Note: The playground surface is a combination of pour-in-place rubber and wood mulch (EWF) which may make it more difficult for a person using a wheelchair to maneuver through the playground.*

Notes It is located in the Austin Community, Columbus Park totals [135.12] acres. The field house features: a fitness center; 2 gymnasiums; 3 kitchens; meeting rooms; senior center and banquet room. Outside, the park offers a nature area, boundless children’s accessible playground with an interactive water feature, bicycle path, jogging path, pavilion and 9-hole golf course. In addition Columbus is a multi-faceted recreation park with an outdoor swimming pool, fishing lagoon, baseball fields, and athletic fields for football and soccer and basketball courts. The beautiful “Refectory” building sits on the park’s grounds and is a popular destination for weddings and special events. Many of these spaces are available for rental such as parties and athletic tournaments. Patrons are especially fond of renting the beautiful Refectory Building for weddings and other formal parties. Park-goers can play basketball, football or soccer at the facility. Afterschool programs are offered throughout the school year, and in the summer youth attend the Park District’s popular six-week day camp. In addition to programs, Columbus Park hosts fun special events throughout the year for the whole family, such as Movies in the Park and concerts.”

Biography This Landscape Structure’s Playground includes an EVOS structure, accessible swings, as well as many other features. As can be seen in the pictures, the surfacing is Playground Grass. Upon entering the park, one can hear music playing in the rocks and bushes, usually oldies or kids’ sing-a-longs. There is a large sign with rules that include: “Explore. Laugh. Experiment. Run. Jump. Slide. Climb. Have fun.” With all of the different attractions, it really leaves you no option. While most parks have the usual swing-set, slide, and monkey bars, Common Ground takes things to a whole new creative level.The Play zones such as Adventure Canyon, Spider Web Peak, Butterfly Meadow, Fossil Beach, Gopher Mountain, Journey Plateau and Sculpture Gulch provide easy, intermediate and challenging play opportunities. The playground consultant was Rep Services.

Biography Royal Palm Beach Commons Park is home to a fitness-focused playground designed for kids ages 5 to 12. Lots of net climbers engage kids’ whole bodies, while the Orbiter® and Gyro Twister® spinners and a variety of slides offer lots of fun. This play area also features an inclusive PlayBooster® playstructure designed to welcome children and families of all abilities with its ramps, sensory-stimulating activities and a Sway Fun® Glider. Biography Concord’s community playground is located at 120 Meriam Road, adjacent to the Ripley Public Schools Administration building, Concord Children’s Center and the Concord Integrated Preschool. Phase I was completed in 2013 includes: * A universally-accessible stonedust path leading from the Playscape entrance to a gathering circle with benches made from 19th-century ship timbers. * A *willow tunnel* comprising two tunnels, one large enough for a grown-up to walk through and a smaller adjoining one for the Playscape’s younger visitors to explore. Made of willow rods which root quickly, the tunnel will ultimately become a living part of the Playscape that changes with the seasons. * Large and small wooden *frog rasps* which make different sounds when a stick is run over them. Smaller rasps will be attached to trees, which larger ones will be affixed to the ground. * *Tree cookies* – sliced tree stumps that are used as stepping stones. Phase II was completed in 2015 includes: * The completion of the *universally-accessible stonedust path* and the installation of a guide rope to be used by the visually impaired and the elderly. * The construction of two landforms, one with benches, to be used for rolling, sledding, and sliding. * The installation in one of the landforms of an embedded slide which can be used by all children, as it is not necessary to climb a ladder to access it. * The addition of two accessible picnic benches. Donated by a local Eagle Scout, these benches have ends that are wider than average picnic tables, allowing a wheelchair to comfortably access the table. * A sand play area and raised “sand ship,” which can be accessed easily by children in wheelchairs and also provides a raised seating area for adults accompanying children at the Playscape. * A dry streambed with a bridge. Phase III completed in the Spring of 2017 includes: * An inclusive merry-go-round accessible to all, including children in wheelchairs, who will be able to roll right on to the merry-go-round in their chair, rather than being transferred from their chair to a seat. * A *community swing* to allow a group of children, including children with disabilities, to enjoy swinging together.

Biography Cooke School in Northville, Michigan, offers a fully inclusive and accessible playground for children ages 5 to 12. Kids are thrilled with the wide range of sensory-rich play activities like the Sway Fun® Glider, Rollerslide and OmniSpin® Spinner. Plus there are lots of playground climbers and many sensory play activity panels to spark the imagination. Before the PlayBooster® playstructure was installed, the student body didn’t have a place to gather and play outside. Now students even do their physical therapy on the playground. It’s become both a teaching tool and a recreation tool. Cooke School also included the HealthBeat® outdoor fitness system for more fitness-focused activity for ages 13+. There are two separate play areas in this park. The largest one located next to the parking lot includes a rubberized surface great for walkers and wheelchairs. The climber includes a ramp allowing wheelchairs access to some of the slides and equipment. The lower playground is accessible via ramp and includes climbers and both traditional and an adapted swing. Biography The playground opened in 2014 and has equipment from Landscape Structures. Some of the equipment is designed to support a child who may be unable to sit or stand on their own, or who might need other physical accommodations. There’s also equipment that addresses children who may be on the autism spectrum or who have sensory processing disorders. Cornelia’s playground is outfitted with bells, a wall with colorful marbles kids can spin, an area where large groups of kids can rock and sway, whether they are seated in a wheelchair, a bench or clinging to the side. Playground includes an EVOS climbing structure, a Sway Fun glider, a roller table. The surfacing is wood mulch (EWF) which make it more difficult for some people to maneuver through the playground.
