This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Biography This destination playground opened in 2010. The playground was designed with the support of parents of children with disabilities. An important motivation in providing this active venue was a report that 48% of the children in Allentown are considered overweight or obese. The playground includes the newest in technology and also a youth fitness trail that was designed to draw and encourage children to play and exercise. The playground includes a huge electronic game called NEOS. The playground also has seating and a pavilion for shade. The entire playground is fenced for safety. There is a bathroom on sight with water fountains. There is ample parking off of Ott Street. Watch Video from the Grand Opening:

Biography Playspace features a great shelter house and composite playground structure on thick rubber tiles. Great spinning pieces, a gazebo and a fantastic soccer field with competition goals. Nearby is a beautiful trail through the scenic ridge and valley. Great spot for a picnic or outdoor classroom event. NOTE: The surfacing is a combination of Rubber Tiles and wood fiber (EWF) which may make it more difficult for a person using a wheelchair to maneuver through the playground.

Notes Park offers: Playground Water Spray features Biography In addition to accessible, the new playground features colorful age appropriate action packed play areas with swings, slides, and climbing elements that keep children busy, soft surface tiles and rubber surfacing, new walkways, new fencing, improvements to existing spray pool, trash receptacles, new drinking fountain, benches, and new landscaping.

Biography Maryland State Parks have thirty-three accessible playgrounds across the state. All have been designed for children between the ages of 5 to 12 years of age. The ADA Access Specialist within MDNR Engineering/Construction, who also serves on MDNR Disabilities Advisory Council, indicated that the following playgrounds meet the Let Kids Play criteria for inclusion in this directory. You can find a map of each park by clicking on the park name. For more information about additional accessibility amenities such as cabins, camp sites, hunting areas, fishing piers, boat ramps, trails, picnic areas, and other adaptive recreation equipment, visit their Marylands’ Accessibility for All website. The playground is located near the accessible Group Shelter and the accessible Comfort Station. The park is located in Brandywine.

Biography Playground includes a wheelchair swing. It is designed with is a slide and climber in each corner so that a parent can stand in the middle and help their child up the climber and down the slide without having to go up the equipment with them.

Biography The Center for Lifelong Learning is a 89,000-square-foot special education school. It was chartered through the Piscataway-based Middlesex Regional Educational Services Commission. The grounds include an accessible playground open to the public during non-school hours. Old Bridge-Sayreville Rotary Club provided the funding for the playground.

Biography The playground which opened in 2016 includes inclusive equipment adjacent to the original playground. The surfacin is Pour-in-Place. It includes a 12-passenger capacity Merry-Go-All Accessible Whirl, an arch swing that can accommodate multiple users at the same time, an inclusive roller table and activity panels.

Biography Opened in June 2014. It is a fully handicapped accessible park that offers visitors A quarter-mile wheeling and walking path around the pond. An over-size bridge, where at least two wheelchairs can easily pass. Four fully accessible fishing piers. A shelter and flag pole. Livestrong Memorial Garden. Fully accessible playground equipment, installed over a special surface Chad Erickson Memorial Park and Vietnam Veterans Trout Pond was developed in consultation with Special Olympics, Rotary, local gardeners, Mathy Construction, Ingersoll Rand-Trane Co., Gillette-Pepsi, U.S. Fish and Wildlife, and participants in the Livestrong cancer survivor network. A portion of the playground has wood chips (EWF) as surfacing making more difficult for people who are using a wheelchair to maneuver.

Notes This active recreation site features 535 acres which include a barrier-free playground, tennis courts, two swimming pools (for lessons only), a Sprayground, an inline rink, basketball courts, open fields, and 2.3 miles of paved trail for walking, biking, and in-line skating. There are also athletic fields available for use for games only, no practices. Please consult the Athletic Field Rentals link to the right under “Facilities” for further information. Biography Challenger Place is a place for all children to play in Monmouth County. This universally accessible playground provides all children, at their own level of play, an opportunity to laugh, play, grow and learn together. This play facility, opened in June 2004, includes elevated surfaces that are accessible to those in wheelchairs and Braille signs for individuals who are visually impaired. Each of the three play structures has areas in where children of varied abilities can play together, enjoying fun and stimulating activities. This playground project was a joint venture of the Monmouth County Park System and Challenged Youth Sports, and Middletown. Adjacent to Challenger Place is the Sprayground. This water-enhanced playground is a great place to be cool and play with water. The facility is open daily from mid-May- early September. The Sprayground opens weekdays at 11 a.m. and at 10 a.m. on weekends and holidays. Closing is at 7:30 p.m.

Biography To honor a 5-year-old boy who lost his life, his parents set out to build an inclusive playground at the elementary school he once attended. Working with their local playground consultant, General Recreation, the Hinishes determined what features were necessary and those they would include should they surpass their fundraising goal. The playground design was a fully-accessible PlayBooster® play structure, Sway Fun® glider, sensory play activity panels, the Rollerslide and Roller Table, plus all of the traditional playground pieces kids love. The Zack Hinish Foundation organized more than 70 volunteers who helped install the new playground over four days.
