This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Notes California Park, acquired in 1967, is a 7.5-acre park located on S. 16^th Street. The California Community Center and Phillis Wheatley Elementary School are located nearby. The park contains ball fields, basketball courts, a multi-purpose field, tennis & volleyball courts, a playground and sprayground. Biography The playground which opened in May 2015 includes an Evos structure, a Sway Fun and swings. The surfacing is half pour-in-place and wood mulch (EWF), which may make it a little more difficult for someone who is using a wheelchair to maneuver throughout the entire playground.

Biography This Shane’s Inspiration playground is surrounded by lush trees and the cries of animals, children can climb the alligators who rise up out of the surfacing or play with the gorillas and elephants who bask in the sun. The Neil Papiano Play Park (located in the upper zoo along the perimeter road) incorporates animal-themed climbing sculptures, large play structures, a toddler area, water misters, grassy landscaping, and a large picnic area. After exploring the real animals, children can hop onto the play pods or take a turn on the spinning disk, something that is critical in promoting balance for children with neurological disorders. Or take a trip down one of the textured slides, providing hours of fun and discovery under the shade of cool, colorful shade structures. The equipment is from Landscape Structures Inc and the playground consultant on this project was RecWest Outdoor Products. NOTE: You must pay admission to the LA Zoo to play at this playground.

Poured-in-place safety surfacing allows children using mobility devices to access every part of the playground, and an extensive ramping system brings them to the center of the playstructure. Three distinct age appropriate play areas have been designed to include a rubber surfaced play area for infants under the age of 2, a tot lot for pre-school age children (2-5 year olds), and an adventure play area for school age children (5-12 year olds). Unique play features are included in the design to create a sensory enriched accessible playground. Such unique play elements in the play areas include an adventure play equipment with access ramps and handrails, a tot lot play equipment with access ramps and handrails, a merry-go-around, swings, spring riders, group rocking units, self propelled spin play units, independent climbing apparatuses and play units with sound features. Brightly colored protective rubber play surfacing in shapes of different planets also add to the space theme. One focal point in the accessible playground is the decorative central seating area with seat walls and a colored sun pattern in the concrete paving which further enhance the solar galaxy theme. A 10-foot wide concrete walkway borders the entire accessible playground site and provides two entries into the accessible playground from 6th Street. This pathway can support persons in wheelchairs and pedestrians. Pathways have various colors and textures to again stimulate different senses. Additional security is provided by a 3-foot high decorative wall and ornamental metal fence that secures the west portion of the accessible playground by eliminating direct access from the playground to the adjacent street. Other amenities in the accessible playground include an art sculpture, raised planters, therapeutic gardens with various textured and scented plants, picnic tables, benches, trash receptacles, a drinking fountain, bike racks, flowering shrubs and groundcovers.

Notes Features: a tot lot rock-climbing wall orange, green and purple play structures a play gym a jungle gym with slides. Biography AAOS partnered with the Friends of Balboa Park and the Neighborhood Parks Department, KaBOOM! and received help from San Francisco’s Recreation and Park Department as well as the City of San Francisco to build this playground as part of their annual meeting. The largest piece of equipment boasts rock walls and climbing nets, two slides, a bridge, an alphabet board translated into sign language, and a wheelchair-accessible ramp. The new playground also has a swing set, a jungle gym with plastic letters on its side to help children learn their ABCs, and a mini yellow school bus.

Biography San Francisco’s largest inclusive playground. The play area is located on the second terrace below the recreation center. The playground has a series of fantasy-inspiring decks, bridges and slides, and incorporates features throughout the park that facilitate play for children with physical, developmental and emotional disabilities.A climbing wall, an “Apollo Whirl” spinning cable structure and a multicolored play surface with colors representing land, water and earth are also new to the playground.

Notes Features: Balance Beams Tunnels Sway Fun Restrooms Biography There are swings designed for the disabled and picnic tables that accommodate wheelchairs. A ramp runs throughout most of the bars and slides and poles. According to Fun Orange County Parks (see pictures of playground), it’s amazingly well-maintained in a peaceful setting across from the Costa Mesa Tennis Center. The many lakes, waterfalls, and waterfowl provide for leisurely strolls and adventures for the kids. The motor skills challenges set this park apart from others – there are pedestals to navigate, balance beams, platforms, standing pedal pushers, and tunnels. Kids of all ages and abilities drawn to the moving sled/car/boat (whatever their imagination divines it to be) The park has a dedicated parking lot. There is recycled rubber play surface and sand play area. There are nice, clean bathrooms very near playground (even a family restroom) with drinking fountains nearby. There are picnic areas and many benches many covered by shade.

Biography Buckle in and rocket to the moon at the space-themed Universally Accessible Playground at Parque De Los Sueños in East Los Angeles. This colorful planetary play space features an interactive shuttle with movable controls, steering instruments, and wide wings for climbing. Older astronauts can go for a space walk along sturdy netting and while hubs provide the ideal gathering places for interplanetary chatting and stargazing through periscopes. A fully-accessible 3-foot-high maze provides hours of active and imaginative play. And for children with developmental delays, sound pucks embedded in the playground encourage auditory discovery. This is a Shane’s Inspiration Playground, with equipment from Landscape Structures Inc, and the playground consultant was RecWest Outdoor Products.

Notes Fully accessible restrooms are available Biography Shane’s Inspiration opened on September 21, 2000 in memory of Shane Williams who died of Spinal Muscular Atrophy. It was the first West Coast Universally Accessible Playground created by the Los Angeles Department of Recreation & Parks. This is a fully accessible disabled children’s playground (Universally Accessible Playground). This playground is located in Park Center of Griffith Park (across from the Merry-Go-Round. The Airplane: Cruise down the accessible “jet way” and take off on this jetliner. Pilot and co-pilot can manage the controls in the cockpit while checking their compass for direction. Accessible Slides: Immediately adjacent to the bottom of each slide is a landing pad, which gives with children mobility challenges the opportunity to depart the slide and comfortably. The Lucky Star Chaser: This space shuttle gives children of all abilities a chance to adventure into space. Ronald’s Ship of Dreams: Ronald’s Ship of Dreams, generously donated by Ronald McDonald House Charities, provides hours of imaginative play. Enter through the accessible “gangway” and explore the wheelhouse, complete with a talk tube radio system.

The playground includes a tot lot for smaller children, an older children’s play area with a mini climbing wall and slide, and drums to beat and bells to ring. The Century Wall that has sounds and a panel on the floor so you can play music with your feet. This unique playground was made by Landscape Structures and Coast Recreation. The area has a splash fountain and a carousel for children. The park also includes handicap accessible rental paddle boats.

Biography The park is home to a sprawling, inclusive PlayBooster® playstructure. With an extensive ramping system, children of all abilities are able to access nearly every point on the playground. They can reach the crawl tunnels, many different slides and play panels, and other fun playground components. Additionally, custom roofs and CoolToppers® shade systems provide protection from harmful UV rays. The playground equipment is from Landscape Structures Inc and was built by RecWest Outdoor Products. This playground was done in collaboration with Shane’s Inspiration.

Biography Overlooking a beautiful, tranquil lake, Prado Regional Park’s unique Universally Accessible Playground design weaves elements of the lush natural landscape into its playful and cool design. Toddlers can sail away in their sturdy and fully-accessible boat while school-age children discover the lost Water Island in the shade of swaying palm trees. The park has a Zero-Depth Water Play Zone. There is a sensory wall that is embedded with water creatures (turtles, fish, frogs) that splash, ribbit, and squirt; while combining a variety of textures, running water, and sound. This is a Shane’s Inspiration playground. Prado Regional Park is a one-stop recreational paradise located in the Chino Valley basin where San Bernardino, Riverside, Orange and Los Angeles Counties connect. The park is loaded with outdoor recreation and adventure offering: Fishing, camping, hiking, biking and nature trails, disc golf, picnic facilities, two 18-hole golf courses, an Olympic shooting range, horseback riding, and archery.
