This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Biography “A Dream Come True” Playground is located off of Neff Avenue on Thomas Bowers Circle. This playground is a totally accessible/inclusive playground with many unique and one-of-a-kind features. The playground has separate equipment for 2-5 year olds and 5-12 year olds plus more fun and exciting equipment. Features include a rock, rainbow arches, shade structures, roadway, hammock swing, draw wall, pavilion, and family comfort stations that are fully accessible. The comfort stations will close for the winter months and will open again in the spring. The park will remain open year round unless the temperature is 32 degrees or below, or the ground is frozen. Biography If you like running through the sprinkler, you’ll love the Fairfax County Park Authority’s newest attraction – Our Special Harbor Sprayground at Lee District Park. The fully accessible complex features Chesapeake Bay-themed attractions including a spraying osprey nest, Chessie the sea serpent, misting sunflowers and a lighthouse. The beach area is quieter with softer bubblers and interactive water tables. The computerized water maze and dumping crab basket provide more lively activity. The spray park, tree house and a playground for children ages 5 to 12 have been completed and are open to the public. The new playground, known as “Chessie’s Big Backyard,” is fully accessible and incorporates slides, swings and other equipment specially designed for use by all children, including those with special needs. In addition to kindergarten through fifth grade general education programs, Pembroke has classrooms dedicated to providing services to students with severe disabilities and serves as the primary home of the Autistic Children Program. Notes Deer Park is located on Jefferson Avenue, just south of J Clyde Morris Boulevard in the center of the city. The park has two entrances, at Robinson Drive and Groome Road. White-tailed deer used to be raised on a game preserve in this area before the land was dedicated as a public park, hence the name “Deer Park”. Notes The park area surrounding the WARF, the Warrenton Sports Complex, features seven rectangular playing fields, the Athey Fields, paved hiking paths (click here for Trail Map), an inline skating rink and skate park, and the new Claude Moore Fun For All Playground. The Claude Moore Fun For All Playground was constructed for all children, with particular focus on accessibility for children with disabilities. The park is designed to help all children with physical, social and psychological development and provides a place where children of differing abilities and their families can come together and have fun. The Town of Warrenton opened the Warrenton Aquatic and Recreation Facility (WARF) in September 2007 as a response to the growing recreational needs of its population of families, active adults and seniors. The WARF is a 59,738 square foot building featuring an 11 lane, 25 yard-by-25 meter, 364,000 gallon indoor competition pool; a 3,600 gallon therapeutic spa and a 68,000 gallon leisure pool with a water slide, lazy river, vortex and a zero depth entry for easy entrance by toddlers, seniors and those in wheel chairs. The WARF also has a 3,200 square foot fitness room equipped with upright and recumbent cycles, treadmills, elliptical trainers, circuit training gear and free weights. Fitness classes for those of all abilities are held in the WARF’s multi-purpose room. Biography “Claude Moore is a similar concept to Clemyjontri, but on a smaller scale. The bouncy rubber surface is a reassurance for parents. There are opportunities galore to balance such as various beams and stepping stumps. A four person teeter totter has high backs for children needing more support along with four spring rockers that have very good spring power! Opportunities abound for those wanting to reach new heights literally! There are two rock climbing pieces including a traditional wall as well as a semi-circular one that you can climb over or crawl through the structure. The most popular equipment was one of two cargo net pieces, with the favored one being the giant spider web as I called it. However, it looks more like a soccer ball. There were more slides than I could count, but there is definitely no shortage. Of the six swings available, there is a harness swing for children with special needs, one bucket swing for wee ones, and four standard swings for the older set. Biography CLEMYJONTRI PARK features a unique playground where children of all abilities can play side-by-side. It is a playground where every child is welcome. This park is a place where children who use wheelchairs, walkers or braces, or who have sensory or developmental disabilities, can have a parallel playground experience of fun and exploration. At CLEMYJONTRI…. Ramps connect structures Swings have high backs, arm rests and special safety features Rubber surfacing allows wheelchairs to roll easily Lowered monkey bars provide easy access Equipment is designed to be sensory rich so all children can participate with peers Wider openings allows easy access to play structures Other features include a carousel and a picnic pavilion. The entrance road leads to an 81-space parking area and a drop-off zone for vehicles whose passengers need close access. Future development will incude other amenities in the surrounding 10 acres of space. PLAYGROUND To the casual observer, the playground at Clemyjontri Park looks like an ordinary playground, with swings, slides and play equipment fun to climb on, under and around. A closer look will reveal that some of those swings have high backs for children who need extra support. Instead of standard transfer platforms there are ramps to the elevated play components. Pathways between equipment are wide and colorful, and the ground surfaces are non-slip and porous designed to provide a greater level of access for children. There is something for everyone – children will be able to find something to climb on, touch, read, do or create. Children will enjoy the challenges of balance and depth perception on the playground’s balance beams. A mini-track can be used to race, playhouses and cubbies offer pleasant spaces for social interaction while also allowing children seeking quiet or separate areas to play in smaller groups. Tent sails provide areas of shade in the playground and benches are located throughout the play area. Just north of the playground is an asphalt trail that connects to site perimeter trails which will eventually encircle the park during future development. The Two Acre Playground Consists of 4 Outdoor “Rooms” Surrounding a Centerpiece Carousel. The Rainbow Room – With rainbow archway, surface with colors of the rainbow and a variety of swings Accommodates all physical levels Integrates sign, Braille, pictures and language Teaches colors of the rainbow The Schoolhouse & Maze – With learning panels forming a maze that may be reconfigured Focuses on educational learning games Teaches where am I reading, maps and a globe Teaches what time it is using time zones and clocks The Movin and Groovin Transportation Area – Designed with transportation themed equipment such as a race track, motorcycles, planes, and trains Stimulates imagination Teaches balance and special skills Mimics true roadway situations Fitness & Fun – Includes the largest piece of play equipment along with various jungle gym components Stimulates imagination Progressive challenges for physical strength Energy burner Builds confidence CAROUSEL Chariots, a spinning tea cup and 14 prancing steeds await only the imagination of children. The carousel is recessed to ground level so that it is accessible for wheelchairs, allowing children to transfer to the tea cup. The Liberty Swing is a swing that allows children in wheelchairs the opportunity to experience the joy of having a swing in the park. It is the only swing of its type that is fully lockable and allows a maximum swing height – that is, really swinging, not just rocking back and forth. Until now, some children have had to sit and watch from the sidelines as their siblings experience the freedom and exhilaration of a swing – something that most of us have taken for granted. Quote from Occupational Therapist “the therapeutic benefits are significant: visual-spatial, muscle tone, head control, self-regulation, attention, emotion. It’s a wonderful product”. Users please be aware: Prior to use of the Liberty Swing the user (or guardian) needs to complete a liability release. Two keys are required to use the swing: one to unlock the gated area surrounding the swing and another to unlock the swing itself. Keys are only guaranteed available when the park is staffed (carousel is operating). If you plan to visit on a day when the carousel is not operating and you wish to use the swing, please contact the office prior to your visit at 703-388-2807 x0 to make arrangements for a key. For users who desire to have a personal set of keys, they are provided free of charge at the Clemyjontri Park office during carousel operating hours (or by arrangement). PICNIC PAVILION The picnic pavilion, open daily dawn to dusk, is a wonderful location for community meetings, picnics, and gatherings. There is direct access to the pavilion from the parking area and entrance to the playground. The picnic pavilion is available for half-day and full-day rentals. When not reserved, the shelter is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Additional picnic tables are located on the property outside of the picnic pavilion when the pavilion has been reserved. Picnic Pavilion reservations cannot be made at Clemyjontri Park. Features of the Pavilion:* The shelter is aproximately 38′ by 38′, and holds six accessible tables to seat up to 48 individuals (including spaces for 16 wheelchairs). Cantilevered tops and cut out areas allow easy wheelchair access for children and adults. The pavilion offers both adult and accessible water fountains, as well as accessible restrooms with baby changing tables. Two GFI duplex electrical outlets are provided for public/park use. Biography Hadley’s Park Playground at Dulles Town Center is a 5000 square foot playground and was built in keeping with the “shopping theme,” and was built around Main Street USA, where you have everything from your local bank to a post office. The playground provides accessibility to disabled children and their able-bodied friends and siblings. Hadley’s Park, Inc. is a local grassroots non-profit organization created in 1996 by Shelley Kramm, of Potomac, Maryland to design, develop, fund and build “A place for all kids to play together”. Project is located in the Dulles Town Center Commons within the 554-acre master planned community and adjacent to the 1.4 million square foot Dulles Town Center super-regional mall and planned 4.5 million square foot Class A Office Park.

Biography Surrounded by palm trees and a rubber play surface, a new play park on the Oceanfront features cameras where visitors can look out into the water and view surfers or dolphins. It also has musical drums, a playground with monkey bars and slides, a boardwalk that leads out to the water and a sensory wall for the autistic and visually impaired. The playground equipment comes from Landscape Structures Inc and the playground consultant on the project was Sparks@Play. There are three paths that take you near the water where you help build sand castles with sand scoops. Beach wheelchairs will be available. There are shaded as well as sun areas for you to hang out. There is a long, gently-inclined ramp that leads to a “lookout” deck six feet above the ground. The deck has room for four wheelchairs, as well as several accessible telescopes. It provides a bird’s-eye view of the park, beach, and ocean that who use wheelchairs rarely get to see. This unique play space has an extensive ramping system to take children using mobility devices to the center of the action. Some of the components included are the Sway Fun®, a Sensory Play Center™, accessible cyclers, various climbers and slides. Notes World Renowned Mount Trashmore Park encompasses 165 acres and is comprised of two man-made mountains, two lakes, two playgrounds, a skate park and vert ramp, and multi-use paths. The main mountain, Mount Trashmore, now 60 feet in height and 800 feet long, was created by compacting layers of solid waste and clean soil. Recognized for its environmental feat, this former land fill features a water-wise garden that boasts xeriscaping, where you can enjoy a beautiful garden that requires minimal water. The park also features a smaller mountain, Encore Hill, and two lakes. Lake Windsor (located along South Blvd.) is brackish water fed by Thalia Creek. Lake Trashmore (located along Edwin Drive) is freshwater and hosts various species of fish. Fishing is permitted from land only and requires a license. Fishers must adhere to all State regulations regarding creel and size limits. No boats, swimming or wading is allowed in the lakes. Biography The Kids Cove Playground at Mount Trashmore Park opened in December 2010. At nearly 26,000 square feet, the playground is comprised of three distinct play areas built on a rubber surface: a giant play structure that includes a multitude of slides, elevated walkways, climbers and more; an area that has swings for all ages; and an area comprised of a variety of climbing structures. Notes The beautifully landscaped and peaceful park across from the east entrance to Macy’s Department Store is named for four women, all with the same first name, who made significant contributions to education on the Peninsula. Biography The playground’s design will facilitate sensory experiences in the following areas: visual, vestibular, tactile, kinesthetic/proprioception, auditory and will offer children an interactive experience when visiting the shopping center. Along with sensory play, the playground will also feature interactive mobile experiences. Guests will be able to download the special app to listen to the stories in up to 16 languages, as well as, create and save photos with their children and characters from the stories. The playground will be themed after two classic Hans Christian Anderson stories- The Little Mermaid and the Ugly Duckling. Biography My Place includes all the features of a traditional playground such as swings and climbing equipment, but was constructed to allow those with disabilities to access every aspect of the facility. The playground, which opened in December 2009, is a privately funded project of the Leadership Historic Triangle Class of 2009. A video of the grand opening The playground surfacing is a combination of pour-in-place rubber and wood mulch (EWF) which may make it more difficult for a person using a wheelchair to maneuver throughout the entire playground.
