This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Biography Freedom Field is located behind Parkside Elementary School. Look for the entrance sign to Blackwell Park. During the school year, the playground is closed M-F 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. This incredible Landscape Structure’s PlayBooster® playground has a theme of “No child left behind.” The 1.5 acre area is inclusive and provides activities for all ages and abilities. The park includes many custom play events as well as The Rock and Spacenet™ Climbers. Custom safety surfacing makes the playground accessible for all. The playground consultant on this project was Countryside Play Structures.

Biography This is the site of the Rotary Club of Westfield’s signature project, a sensory garden that surrounds an all-inclusive playground, with several unique and interactive play features. The park is bordered by Cool Creek and serene woodlands and has a beautiful riparian way on the east side of the park. There are some minor wetlands, and the flora and fauna in this area make for a unique setting. An ongoing prairie restoration on the west side of Freedom Trail Park was started in 2010. During the design, the Hamilton County Autism Support Group (HCASG) provided guidance in making sure the features included were ones which individuals with autism would prefer, such as spinning and twirling structures. The all-inclusive play equipment was built so more than one individual utilizing a wheelchair can pass on the wide ramp system leading to all the play features. There are also accessible swings. The Westfield Rotary Club has planted over 2,000 plants and flowers along the pathways of the playground. These specialty garden plantings entice its visitor to experience four of the five senses, those being sight, sound, smell and touch. The colors of the flowers will have a big impact on children with autism. The bright colors of the flowers, orange, blue, green and yellow were specifically selected because they have a calming and creative effect on the brain. Two local Eagle Scouts added two sensory features to the play area, the interactive wind chime and four natural tee pees, which were completed in Summer 2011. These features afford children the opportunity to experience the sound of oversized wind chimes and sit enclosed in the tee pees covered with flowering vines. NOTE: The playground has a combination of Pour-in-Place surfacing and wood mulch (EWF) which may make it difficult for a person using a wheelchair to maneuver through the playground.

Biography Karst features the Splashpad water play area, the huge Playscape accessible playground, a disc golf course, and a fenced dog park in addition to the Commons rental building, several picnic shelters, smaller playgrounds, and athletic fields. Walking trails circle the arboretum and extend into the natural forested sections of the park, where there are a couple of ponds.

Biography The playground opened in May 2022. Some of the inclusive structures in the playground include a Sensory Wave climber, shaded musical instruments, wheelchair-accessible turf and ramps, and inclusive swings, slides, and zip line. The playground cost about $1 million, and it is intended to bring kids with disabilities together with friends by featuring play equipment that all kids can enjoy together.

Note: the surfacing is Engineered Wood Fiber (mulch) which may make it more difficult for people using a mobility device to maneuver through the playground.

Playground includes a 1/8 of a mile walking trail surrounding the playground, a sensory garden area, open green space for activities, plenty of shade and seating as well as equipment from Landscape Structures: Omni Spinner, Roller Slide, Wee Saw, Net Plex, Topsy Turvy, various climbing rocks and a ZipKrooz. Biography The playground features a splash pad in the center. Surrounding the splash, is a ramped structure for 5-12 year olds, a ramped structure for 2-5 year olds, swings, a music area, T-Rex,an Areoglider and a NEOs game.
