This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Notes Avenue Park offers picnic areas, two universally accessible playgrounds, plenty of walking paths, interactive musical instruments, and a skate park. Biography The 4th Avenue Park, located in Los Angeles County, celebrates America’s movement West with this historically themed playground design. Kids of all abilities can join a covered-wagon caravan, then stand lookout at the top of the O.K. Corral fort maze. A TuffRider® Horse provides a great getaway. Notes Features: An airplane theme 3 water misters connected to play equipment Sand area Biography One of the features in the Airplane where young pilots and co-pilots will enjoy a fully-accessible cockpit loaded with features. They can communicate with the Control Tower via a talk tube radio and plan their route on the navigation panels. Many children with physical disabilities are denied the age-old tradition of digging in the sand because their wheelchairs can’t negotiate most sand play areas. The Sand Castle is located a foot above the sand and features wide walkways throughout, allowing children of all abilities to scoop, build, and discover at elevated sand tables. There are water sprays coming from three misters, which are connected to the play equipment, offers hours of fun and a great way to beat the heat at the playground. Water provides a wonderful sensory experience for all children but is denied to many children with disabilities. This is a Shane’s Inspiration Playground. The equipment is from Landscape Structures and the playground consultant on this project was RecWest Outdoor Products.

Trippple Slide Spiral Slide Roundabout Wave Ladder Rockblock Structure Matrix Wall Monorail Telescopes Challenge Walk Suspension Bridge Beanstalk climber Rocky Ridge Climbers U-Bounce Talking Tubes Biography Built by The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons along with community partners Alvarado Elementary School and San Francisco Unified School District, in conjunction with KaBOOM! Included are rubber surfaces, wheelchair-accessible ramps, age-appropriate play structures for children 5-12, and safety signs in Braille and Spanish. It also features several slides and imaginary play components, along with climbing and balancing activities — including a play wall that simulates rock-climbing in a special physical challenge area of the playground sponsored by Sanofi-Synthelabo. The playground was developed from input provided by Alvarado Elementary School students and parents at a special “Design Day”

The park features two baseball fields that can be used as soccer fields, a 10-court tennis center (one court is clay) and pro shop, playground equipment accessible to wheelchair users, two sand volleyball courts, a water-splash feature for children and a walking/jogging trail.

Notes Features: Balance Beams Tunnels Sway Fun Restrooms Biography There are swings designed for the disabled and picnic tables that accommodate wheelchairs. A ramp runs throughout most of the bars and slides and poles. According to Fun Orange County Parks (see pictures of playground), it’s amazingly well-maintained in a peaceful setting across from the Costa Mesa Tennis Center. The many lakes, waterfalls, and waterfowl provide for leisurely strolls and adventures for the kids. The motor skills challenges set this park apart from others – there are pedestals to navigate, balance beams, platforms, standing pedal pushers, and tunnels. Kids of all ages and abilities drawn to the moving sled/car/boat (whatever their imagination divines it to be) The park has a dedicated parking lot. There is recycled rubber play surface and sand play area. There are nice, clean bathrooms very near playground (even a family restroom) with drinking fountains nearby. There are picnic areas and many benches many covered by shade.

Biography Athan Downs was designed to bring kids of all abilities together to play and create memories and friendships. The playground includes many accessible and sensory-rich activities including the Sway Fun® glider, OmniSpin® spinner, Roller Table and much more. Notes Avocado Heights Park is a beautiful park with picnic areas, a children’s play area, a multipurpose athletic field, a basketball court and exercise and fitness stations. The park also has an equestrian arena so equestrians are welcome to bring their horses to the park for day-use. Avocado Heights is a passive park and does not offer programs. Biography This is a Shane’s Inspiration playground. The surfacing appears to be a mix of wood chips (EWF) and pour-in-place rubber. The wood chips may make it more difficult for a person using a wheelchair to maneuver through the playground.

Notes Features: a tot lot rock-climbing wall orange, green and purple play structures a play gym a jungle gym with slides. Biography AAOS partnered with the Friends of Balboa Park and the Neighborhood Parks Department, KaBOOM! and received help from San Francisco’s Recreation and Park Department as well as the City of San Francisco to build this playground as part of their annual meeting. The largest piece of equipment boasts rock walls and climbing nets, two slides, a bridge, an alphabet board translated into sign language, and a wheelchair-accessible ramp. The new playground also has a swing set, a jungle gym with plastic letters on its side to help children learn their ABCs, and a mini yellow school bus.

Biography The new playground which replaced the one that burned down in 2008 features a pirate ship and a castle. The ship is for 2-5 year olds, and the castle is for 6-12 year olds. Both are ramped making it easily accessible for everyone. The playground includes many interactive panels including music chimes, drums, and gears to spin. There are 4 bench swings and 2 baby swings.

Biography Over 70% of the play area at Burton Park Playgrounds can accessed by all children regardless of physical ability. A native plant landscaping is included in the play areas. There is a sand area and a water spray area that is active in the Spring, Summer and Fall months. In addition to the playground, Burton Park currently contains Madsen softball diamond, Flanagan baseball field, a large soccer field, three tennis courts, two full basketball courts, a tennis practice court, two horseshoe pits, the Kiwanis Recreation Building, two children’s play areas (one completely fence-enclosed and each with a play structure, slide, and swings), park benches, picnic tables, barbecue pits, and a turfed play area. The park has extensive landscaping throughout, including a number of mature trees.

Biography “Cambridge Park has a neat play area that is designed for kids of all abilities. I love it when all kids can participate. There are two play structures, one of which is wheelchair accessible. There are also neat play instruments that a visually impaired child could really enjoy. The park has two of each type of swing, including two handicapped swings. There is lots of rubberized turf and also tanbark ground covering. One downside is the lack of shade over the play area. The play structures offer lots of climbing opportunities and six slides between them. One structure also has a small tunnel. Biography The playground at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles is located just off the HBO Café. The spot is meant to be a relaxing place for patients and families. It is a place for kids of all abilities to play together. With a spongy fall surface throughout the grounds, kids are invited to steer a pilot’s wheel, peer through a periscope, sway back and forth on a wheelchair-accessible glider and prop themselves up with the help of strategically placed handle-bars to count on an abacus – activities that are physically and mentally challenging and fun. This is a Shane’s Inspiration Playground that opened in 2010 with equipment from Landscape Structures.
