This directory lists playgrounds that have inclusive and accessible features. Yes, we would all love to have the perfect inclusive playground in our neighborhood. But we know that is not reality. Here you can find the best of the best as well as playgrounds that have added accessible swing seats or other accessible feature.

We know that it is difficult to push a wheelchair through wood mulch (EWF) and we have done our best to let you know about the surfacing.

In the BIO section, you will find a description of the playground. In the NOTES section, you will find information about the park the playground resides.

All of the playgrounds (at the time of publication) are open to the public. Any of the playgrounds located at schools, you can assume are open afterschool and on weekends. You may want to call the school to check on the opening times.

We have done our best to give as much information as we can find to describe the playgrounds. But we cannot visit all of these playgrounds, so please let us know what we are missing by submitting the park using the button below.

Biography The playground features specialized swings that accommodate wheelchairs without a person needing to leave their chair. The playground also includes stations for sensory play, swings for disabled students who do not need a wheelchair, a slide that is wheelchair accessible, a large “boat” that glides back and forth and a rubber surface that makes it easier for wheelchairs to get around. Biography This playground won top honors in a national competition sponsored by the National Organization on Disability and the National Association of Counties. Playground facilities include raised sandboxes and mechanical diggers suitable for use by seated children. Thoughtfully designed swings and wide ramps make the playground suitable for children with and without special needs. In addition to a football field and seven baseball/softball fields, Bay Creek Park also features a special-needs ball field with a rubberized surface and large, level “dugouts” usable by wheelchairs.

Biography The Discovery Garden is located next to the Red Wing Area Universal Playground at Colvill Park. The Discovery Garden is a wheelchair-accessible raised bed garden for children and people of all ages and abilities. The garden was created to please all the senses and we encourage every visitor to not only look, but to stop and smell, touch and even listen to the plants. There are nine gardens that make up the Discovery Garden. The four outside gardens are each planted with two colors: The Ladybug Garden (red/pink), the Moon Garden (silver/white), The Sun Garden (yellow/orange) and the Water Garden (blue/purple). The other gardens are: The Fragrance Garden, the Faerie Garden, the Butterfly & Hummingbird Garden, the Cook’s Garden and the Rainbow Garden. Their website has a video showing how they built the Discovery Garden, a brochure describing how the garden was conceived, and a drawing of the garden layout.

Biography A Boundless™ Playground and includes a Sway Fun Glider. Upjohn Park is 18 acre park that contains Kik Pool which is the only 50 meter outdoor swimming pool in the Kalamazoo area. The park also includes the City of Kalamazoo’s first skateboard park, a rugby/soccer field, tee ball/softball field, basketball court, tennis court, and picnic shelter. The playground includes many interesting musical instruments. This playground was funded in part by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation‘s Able to Play project in honor of the Foundation’s 75th anniversary. Note: The surfacing contains a combination of both pour-in-place rubber and wood mulch (EWF) which may make it more difficult for a person using a wheelchair to maneuver through the playground.

Biography The Valley’s Inclusive Playground (VIP) provides disabled children accessible learning and skill panels, music panels and other activities. There are specially designed ramps and cushioned flooring for easy wheelchair maneuverability, a swing designed to allow a child to stay in his/her wheelchair while swinging, and other swings to hold kids in place while on the equipment.

Biography This playground at Valley View Elementary School serves not only the students at the school, but the community, as well. The inspiration for this playground is Ben Nelson, a Valley View student who has Spinal Muscular Atrophy and is in a wheelchair.t. The effort also received media support from Newsradio 620, as part of the WTMJ Cares campaign, raising about $50,000 from listeners and station sponsors.

Notes Features: 2 Saucer Swings Double Bench Shark/Dolphin Bouncer Large Ring Spinner Large Climber with Tall Slide and Spinner Large Web Climber Biography Valleyview Park 5-12+ Playground, with recycled tire flooring, is completely accessible allowing children in wheelchairs or with reduced mobility to get right up into the play. There are saucer swings, a large web climber, and a large ring spinner. There is a double bench shark/dolphin bouncer, a large climber with a tall slide and spinner. This playground provides many opportunities for kids who benefit from vestibular motion to spin, swing, and bounce. There is a limited of shade at the park. There are an ample amount of picnic tables and benches in the park area.
